As usual I can't vote (apparently already have??), but I wonder how many people clicked no by mistake because it's where yes should be - doesn't yes usually come first in this sort of thing?

It depends on where I stick the Yes/No. In this particular case I've deliberately placed them around the wrong way. I can't be held responsible for the non observant people out there ;o) Well done for spotting though.

I have no idea why you can't vote.

(Following words provided by Martyn - Ex BR Moderator) - "The software supplied by alxnet provides a number of different blocking modes to choose from, but as I'll explain these are not altogether appropriate.

The first blocks comeback voters by IP address (the address of the voter's computer), but since most service providers give you a different IP address each time you go online that would be ineffective.

The second uses cookies. This works in our case -- for registered users at least -- because you need to have cookies functioning in order to use The Back Room.

However, both systems block comeback voters for a given number of days. If -- as we've been doing -- we post a new poll every week or so, that means that people may not be able to register a vote in a subsequent poll. The upshot is that we've used both the IP method and the cookie method, but reduced the blocking time to 24 hours.

The results may well be skewed by repeat voting, but I work on the assumption that if anyone wants to stuff the poll up, it's their funeral not mine."

The only thing I can suggest is to delete your cookies, in case you've got a rouge one somewhere.

You won't find them in your PC's cookie jar.

Rouge ones are toe be found along with other cosmetic types in your PC's makeup bag.

Do I really? Or is it my computer perhaps that needs them?

I am probably the only person in the Backroom who has not the faintest idea what a cookie is - to me it's American technobabble, inspired no doubt by Bill Gates.

My computer - a newish Evesham - must have them as I am here now, logged in.

Would someone like to enlighten me? (Yes, I know there is a special thread for this sort of question, but you mentioned it in this one, Dynamic Dave - so please accept my apologies.)

Are you hungry? Is your 'puter hungry? :)

Yes, but I'll have a biscuit.

British and proud of it, although I confess that doesn't extend to running a Rover!

If you're using Internet Explorer as your browser, then press the function key F1. This will open the help files. Click on the Index tab and type the word Cookies into the box.

I use AOL, but got the following little gem by putting 'cookies' into Google -

"Cookies are pieces of information generated by a Web server and stored in the user's computer, ready for future access. Cookies are embedded in the HTML information flowing back and forth between the user's computer and the servers"

There are certain things one would do better not to ask....

A bit like cars. Back in 1969 I think I knew what every component was for under the bonnet of my first car (a much-loved 14-year-old Austin A50). Not any more - I must just be glad that it all works.
