I second holiday autos.

If you choose a company who don't include the cdw excess/waiver in the price, there was a good annual CDW insurance policy recommended on this site - www.insurance4carhire.com/

Interesting. I tried several sites yesterday to hire a car in Barcelona for a week. Cheapest was Hertz for a week for a Focus or similar at £150. Holiday Autos was £155. Mind you Avis was £227!

Having said that, might be best to wait till you get there and hire something through one of the local firms. 10 days in Crete last year cost 200 Euros, about £133 for a Polo, in good condition. The drawback is that you run the risk of getting a real banger.

Holiday Autos used to offer really good deals - but seem to have put their prices up a lot this year. They were taken over by lastminute.com and I suspect that may be the reason. They have also withdrawn their free 'Super CDW' on internet bookings - pity

Holiday Autos was recently (??) taken over by lastminute.com so things might have changed on the price front. They always used to be open to a bit of bargaining - why not ask them to sharpen their price.

Type 'Marius Girona' into google.
I have been using this company for several years. Price is fully inclusive, meets you at airport, usually gives you upgrade, cars always new,no extra charge often for one way rentals. All cars have aircon.Cover Barcelona/Girona/Costa Brava. Highly reccommended

Try auto-europe.co.uk. I've used them several times and always found them reliable. They guarantee to beat any quote, like-for-like.Have a special offer at the moment of £403.33 for 14 days for a Corsa, all inclusive.

!!!!!!
I'd hate to see their normal prices. Is the Corsa gold-plated?
I hired a convertible in the US for a fortnight for approximately a quarter of that price.

Depends how soon after arrival you need the car.
The really good deals are sometime from local companies who have no web presence.

For example, in my Czech wife's home town is an independent rental company that we use, having first taken the train to get there from the airport. We typically hire 1.4MPI Fabias, never more than 18 months old, twice brand new, and always clean and in fine mechanical fettle. For this we pay £12 per day and 4p per mile, including insurance. By the time we've purchased fuel, and consumed it at about 40MPG, we end up paying £22-£25 per day. Almost too good to be true, but it is true.

car hire in Spain and the USA has little connection with car hire in Slovenia. I've checked half a dozen sites and they all run £380 to £450 for a Corsa - some won't even quote for Slovenia. As I said, they promise to beat any like for like quote.

I've also found auto-europe to be good. Its worth bearing in mind though that they are an agent and your car will be supplied by one of the major car hire firms. Not all prices incluse excess cover insurance (e.g Budget) and if not, its worth taking the optional cover with auto-europe.

I had a bad experience in Austria recently. On returing the car, the hire desk found a couple of hairline scrathces, that I think may well have already been on the car when I collected it. I denied liability. As I signed the pre-hire inspection (without seeing the car - doh!), the hire company maintained I was liable and took £300 from my credit card to cover the "repair", though I find it hard to beleive they actually had any intention of getting the work done!

Air Miles sometimes have good deals, I often use them. They use Avis.

Note: worth joining the preferred / express schemes at Avis / Hertz etc, saved at least an hour or more of queuing at Barcelona airport this summer. You give the company all your details then when arriving at the airport just go to the preferred desk confirm who you are with your passport and 5 minutes later you are driving away (I also got upgraded from group C or E at no extra cost). However, this facility does not operate at all airports. Sshh don't tell everyone.
