Passat suspension recall? - Passat TDI Man
Hi,

I think is to do with the front suspension lower arms my passat(99 TDI) has just been in for a front suspension check at VW and I was told that my right lower arm shows signs of wear. They said that it would be replaced FOC because of the Passat recall in progress. Unfortunately you only get it FOC if you have a full VW service history which unfortunately I don't, so it will remain on the car showing signs of wear for sometime ! My advice would be to contact your local VW dealer

From experience of my sons Passat, the next symptoms will be a squeek from the balljoint every time you hit a bump or turn the steering wheel.
If it is showing signs of wear it will be picked up on the next MOT & will be upsetting the steering geometry.
Eurocarparts do a pattern part for about £50, VW price was £130
& is fairly easy job to change if you've got the necessary tools.

Recall Ref: 1999/073
Description: Potential Premature Wear Of Steering Ball Joints.
Defect: Faulty seals could lead to premature wear of the track rod bearings (ends) and if the warning noises are ignored it is possible that the track rod bearing pin could work loose and affect steering control.
Action: Recall vehicles in order to replace the track rod ends with ones fitted with an improved seal.

I know that the Octavia is realted to the Golf, rather than the Passat, but since i bought mine 2 years ago at 68,000 miles, i have all sort of banging and squeaking from the front of the car when the car was cold. The dealer could never find anything wrong. Also the tracking was hard to sort out.

I have just had the ball joints replaced at 105,000 miles at Nationwide (for all of £120) and the noise has gone and the tracking is sorted.

It affects older Audi A4s and A6s too. VAG has had a number of recalls for front supension issues with these cars in the last 3 years. Got two letters from Audi myself this am.
