If this subject has come up before,I apologise,but......
Has anyone on here got a radar detector,if so,what make/model,is it any good, and what did you pay for it?
The reason I ask,is because I'm thinking of getting one for my truck, but I don't want a Road Angel or similar.I know what make/model I fancy, but I want to hear other peoples opinions first before I decide.

Personally, I'd hang fire and wait for the D.O.T. to make up their mind on whether they're gonna ban 'em or not.

I've got two - a Whistler 1750 and a 1760. Bought the 1750 as it matched the dash/interior/illumination colour of the MINI. It's got voice announcements though and this did my head in so I've relegated it to the Clio.
Bought the 1760 as it just beeps but has the amazing(!) added advantage of a digital compass.
They both are pretty good at detecting the Gatso/Mobile camera/DIY superstore/Motorway service station/light sensor that most radar detectors do.
I tend to ignore the beeps as you get used to where they go off, but I do react to beeps in new places if you see what I mean.
In the Mini I use Checkpoint POI with the Pocket GPS scamera database (and TomTOm) and it works pretty well.
So I'd guess something like a Road Angel with laser/radar detection would be a very good compromise.
Crazy thing is, I really don't speed and definitely not around town/built up areas - HOWEVER - the beeping reminds me to be careful and to double check my speed where it the authorities have deemed it a sufficiently dangerous place to monitor speed.

I bought a Cheetah, complained because it seemed faulty. They sent a new one. I've now sent them both back. On my regular journey I pass 9 gatsos, the Cheetah picks up, at random, 2.
It's great at taffic lights, door radars, mobile phone repeaters, trust it with a camera? No.

The ones I'm looking at,are the Snooper S5,and S5-R,and also the Bel 550 and 995.
I've done some extensive reading, and these seem to be the top models on the market.
The Bel range seem to be cheaper Stateside, but by the time you pay for postage, and run the risk of import duty, they're no cheaper than over here.
My mate has a Road Angel, and the problem he has with it,is the fact that it warns you of cameras in sites that were used by temporary roadworks, that are no longer there, although this is due to people inputting the information as a permanent site.

I had a Snooper S5 for a month or so. It was OK, did what it said on the tin, but when I thought about it there aren't many radar traps these days and once you react to the laser warning you've probably already been done.
So I got rid of it and bought SmartNav with the SafeSpeed option - i.e. notification of impending fixed speed cameras. The unit is excellent (over a year old now) and I would still recommend to anyone (and frequently have here!)

The Road Angel is a very good one, Picks up all speed cameras & never ever gives false alarms.
You connect it to your pc with the usb cable & update it whenever you wish.
So simple to use to.
After the first year you have to renew the subscription, But thats only £49 for one year, £79 for 2 years or £99 for life.

Do not buy a US import radar detector. They are specifically tuned for use on UK roads.
I really would look at the Blue2. Friend has one and the updates on the database are not added unless checked by Blue2, and added within 48 hours. It also has laser detector.

Left a word out, perchance?

I can reccomend the Road Angel no false alarms and useful accident blackspot information

Road Angel works fine for me.
The data base gets updated regularly so the temporary camera data soon dissapears.
Went through the average speed cameras on Nottingham ringroad for the first time yesterday. Road Angel was working overtime.

I have a Cheetah, yes it's not perfect and it does pickup false signals, mostly in car parks and filling stations. It does pickup Gatsos, but only those with active cameras so the 2 out of 9 on your journey are the 2 with cameras in them. That is the reason the D.O.T. want to ban them, as unlike GPS systems they only detect active cameras thereby allowing motorist to speed through inactive Gatsos (if you trust the detector?), potentially destroying the deterrence effect. At traffic lights what it is picking up (probably?) is red light cameras.
IMO the Cheetah does it's job well with some false alarms, but for £100 (last time I looked) it is far cheaper than any of the GPS systems.
