I have followed a number of Ford Mondeo & Focus TDCis that were emitting clouds of black smoke from the exhaust, even under quite gentle acceleration. This is surely not what one would expect from a modern common rail diesel. The one I saw this morning was an O3 reg., so not very old.

Not the case with my son's June '03 Focus Zetec 1.8 TDCI - mind you as he does a big mileage, he changes the oil and filter on a very regular basis.

There is a known fault with the EGR valve which has this effect, along with sluggist acceleration/misfire around 1800 rpm.

It was probably 'modified' with a tuning box of some sort and turned up to near maximum.

The other day I was overtaken by a Focus TDCi along a dual carriageway that runs uphill. It was emitting a lot of smoke I thought at the time.
