Rover 416 Info wanted - Mumbler
It's been so long that I posted on the forum that I forgot which e-mail address I used, as well as the password. Must be getting old.

I may be interested in a post 95 Rover 416 Auto.

Does anybody know:

1. When did Rover stop fitting the Honda engine & ATF?

2. Is the Tailgate hinge panel rust problem restricted to certain years? Can it be prevented?

3. Did Honda ever sort their problems with Igniter modules?

4. Is there anything else I should really really worry about?

Before you all leap on me and tell me about the problems with K series engines, I have absolutely no intention of ever buying anything with a K engine in it.

Thanks in advance

problems that arose mostly was that they weren`t looked after.most that I have come across.are still going strong in most cases head gasket prob has been sorted and cars are still going strong.you only need to look on the road to notice how many are around.

Hi,

I believe Rover stopped using the Honda 1.6 (used 1.6 K series instead) when they changed the models in about 1996. So if this is a new-shape 400 (like a 45) then I think it's a Rover engine. Certainly the "new" 200 Coupes (with the new-style interior etc.) had the Rover engine rather than the Honda.

You can tell very easily by looking - facing the car, if the gearbox is on the right it's Rover; on the left it's Honda.

As steve.o says, the K-series engines aren't bad on the whole. My old one (sold to a friend) was still going strong at 140k miles when she wrote it off. I later saw the car in the scrap yard, having had its engine taken.

I am 99% certain that it was only the manual 416's that went over to K series, the autos continued with the Honda unit.

In terms of the Honda ignition amplifier issues, I think these were sorted with the R8 Rover 200 and 400's being a problem with the early 1990s 200s with the Honda 1.6s. My friend had a 216Efi and he simply had one in his glovebox, they were £20 in those days, he never needed it.

Also as for the 'K'. Look after it, it looks after you, the problem really is with not doing simple checks on levels and checking for leaks. The engine only holds 1.2 litres of coolant inside the engine, so if there is a leak, it can overheat very quickly.

The sports car fratnerity have been using K's revving them to stupid numbers and they are still very happy to use them.

Honda unit was only used on the auto on 416.Manual had rover unit 1.4/1.6.

Rover used the Honda 1.6 on the post 95 new shape models, the only other auto was, and is, the CVT fitted to the 45 1.8 and the probably mythical 2.0 CV6. What I any trying to find out is how late can I go and still get the Honda engine. The Parkers price guide has been revamped and is now nearly as useless as it is illegible. It quotes a price for the auto g/b but rarely gives any indication of what models may be fitted with one.

The only mention of the rust problem is in the the car by car guide on this very website!

Thanks for all the replies, I may stick with Plan A which is the Nissan Almera 1.6.

Probably more reliable, cheaper insurance and service parts, and an overall less complex car.

Hi Mumbler.

I ran one of these for a while. The good, bad and the ugly can be found here:

I think your Almera plan has some merit.....

I suspect you are right. I seems, and I am sure this has been said many, many times before, that Rover get it right after about 3 years of production, whereas the Far Eastern makers get it right almost first time.

The trouble is that the number of Escortish sized autos is limited, and many have these CVT trannies which seems to go twang after a few years, then cost £3K to replace.

The Almera or possibly a Corrolla look even more attractive.

Mazda 323 is a dark horse, but the only one I like is the just discontinued model, which are a bit pricey at present.

The search will continue.

p.s. I would not turn my nose up at a 98/99 Astra, as long as it is the 1.6 or 1.8 16v petrol.

We have a large number of 1.6i 8V Autos for sale in the area (ex Motobility cars?) which I am told would not pull the skin of the proverbial rice pudding.
