Out of interest i was wondering if fully synthetic 0w40 would be suitable for the new 1.4 duratec engines in the fiesta.

I would stick to the 5w30. The Duratec units are not exactly trouble free units. These engines have been released in the USA for sometime and a number of engine failures have been reported.
These engines are without doubt not as strong as the Zetec E or Zetec S units and rumour has it that these Mazda and Ford jointly designed engines were only developed to reduce production costs.
Best to stick to 5w30 Semi Synthetic any other oil may well void the 3-year warranty

The New fiesta 1.4 duratec is the same engine as the 1.4 and 1.6 Zetec SE in the focus. (and 1.25 in the old fiesta)
There are some minor differences such as an electronic throttle, new inlet maniford, plastic camshaft wheels etc.
In my 1.25, I have used have previously used Chevron 5W40 (Costco) fully Synthetic and latterly Ford Formula E 5W30 oil and have no problems. Local dealer sells it for £12. Dont see any point spending more?
I change every 3500 miles (6 months) and the rocker box is spotless.

There without doubt has been Duratec engine failures in the US the 1.8,2.0 and the 2.3(which is only availible in the US at present) have had problems.
The Duratec in the larger sizes is chain driven while the legacy Zetec E is belt driven.

I am confused. I believed that the original duratec was the 2.5 V6 fitted in the Mk1 Mondeo etc etc. At this time all the other engines in the mondeo range were Zetec E's etc.
When the latest mondeo and fiesta were released,I thought that the name Duratec was just placed on all of the engines, but that apart from the V6's they are Zetec E's but with some modifications.

When the updated Fiesta was launched in 1995 with vastly improved ride and handling, it could also be obtained with the 1.25 Zetec engine and, later, the 1.4.
My son had the 1.4 and, like the bigger Zetec engines, knew that it had to have semi-synthetic 5-30 oil when the did an oil and filter change; this was due to normal oils causing problems with the valves sticking and damaging the engine after being left, sometimes even just overnight.
Ford dealerships were well aware of the potential problem and used this type of oil as a matter of course, including the larger capacity versions.

When saying normal oils I should have stated 10-40 semi-synthetic.
