Advice needed. Bought a vent mounted air freshener. Overnight it became detached and spilled over the gearshift surround.
My Mondeo (2003) has aluminium trim which now has a large black ?stain? after reacting with the liquid. Will not clean with spirits. Any suggestions, or is it a replacement trim? At what cost?

Wonder Wheels is an acidic aluminium brightner, and works wonders on cam covers and inlet manifolds, but I doubt you could restore your interior trim with anything other than replacement, you may be able to remove the black, but the original finish would be too nice to get back to normal.

Is Wonder Wheels dangerous? I know all chemicals shoudl be used with caution but I used it once and got told it was too dangerous and they didn't know why it was sold.

There was one on Ebay last week, can't find it now, but it might be worth trolling through Category: Automotive: Cars: Parts by brand: Ford and seeing if you can find it or alternatively put that category as one of your favourites and wait for one to come along. If you are anywhere near the A1 in South Yorkshire there is a guy at Askern near Doncaster breaking a 2002 zetec email him at s@seymour73.freeserve.co.uk, he will post the item to you (at cost).

Thanks for your help. Looks like a replacement trim. Saw the one on E-Bay. Looked like just the chrome trim to go round the gearshift gaiter. I need the full aluminium trim that covers most of the centre console.

Is it actually aluminium, or plastic with an imitation coating?

I would guess its actually aluminium (metal anyway) although its difficult to tell. Seems like the freshener has reacted with the metal and caused this discolouration. Its not just a stain!

If its for the facelift mondeo i've got a spare trim if you get stuck.

I don't think these are proper aluminium, they seem to be coated in some sort of plastic/resin which is probably what has reacted.
I believe these aren't massively expensive from Ford - about £20.
www.fordpartsuk.co.uk will sell you one 10 or 15% below Ford's list price.

Thanks anyway. The one I need is similiar but curves up to incorporate the holes for cup holder, boot release button etc. Facelifted (2003) model?
