I have been offered a 92J Celica GT manual with 80k history, air-con, and electric sunroof, in red. Looks good, but i don't know what its worth, can anyone help?

I have a 91J Celica GT, also in red. I bought it from auction 18 months ago for £1680. Yours being a 92 model will have a catalyst, and be rated at 154bhp, as opposed to non cat versions at 158bhp. (You can always tell the 1992 on models, as they inherited the Toyota '3 elipse' badge, as opposed to the old badge that simply said 'Toyota'!)They all have electric windows and sunroofs, however air con was standard for 1992-on model years. I would suggest paying no more than £2000, and only then if it is mint, with full Toyota history. Make sure the air con does blow cold, and that the timing belt was replaced at 60k. Parts are expensive, and not readily available from motor factors, including Halfords, which only stocks basics like air and oil filters (but not fuel filters which are hard to obtain)
If you intend keeping up the service history at a dealer, be prepared to pay!
All in all, fantastic, well made, extremely reliable cars, that are even good on petrol, I'd highly recommend Celicas!
Maybe someone else could advise you on the current Glass' Guide price.

A quick Autotrader search:
url123.com/vezpw
suggests between £500 and £1500 would be about right. The advice above sounds good, and at this age you need to buy on condition, rather than what a guide will tell you. Glass's will probably just tell you that to a trader its worth very little... As has been pointed out on these pages before, Glass's don't sell cars!

AN Other,
That link doesn\'t re-direct to the AutoTrader website.

Sorry - it seemed to work fine when I posted it, and it worked fine when I clicked on it just now. It's supposed to link to a specific page of results. Strange!

Would you happen to know which year Toyota increased the front disc size?
|
|
|
Thanks. I have had trouble deciding what its worth as the standard Glass's guide only list car from 96 on.
I was unaware the parts are not easy to find. I better look into parts availability.
Is it possible to remove the CAT, and stick in a decat pipe? What is the rewuirement for MOT does the car jsut have to pass a specific emissions level?
|
Hmmmm... Try:
www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/
There's a specific Celica forum, and it doesn't look too Max Powerish!
|
If I remember correctly, 92 on model years had 15 inch wheels as standard, as opposed to 14 inch before, perhaps that is when front discs changed.
Didn't mean to worry you about part availability, like I said, I had a devil of a job getting a fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor, otherwise, sundries like brake pads, oil filters etc are relatively easy to obtain. Look in your yellow pages to see if there is a specialist Japanese parts place, you'd be surprised how many there are, I found one close to me in Cardiff, they got everything!
A superb Toyota specialist site is www.fensport.com
These deliver parts etc.
The 3S-GE engines on the Celicas are bullet proof, and at only 80k will have years left in it.
|
If you go into WH Smiths, both Parkers and What Car guides list these older (5th generation) Celicas.
I wouldn't have thought it was a prob to de cat the car, there are loads of performance mods available from fensport.

Thanks for all your help.
Whats the handling like?
|
The handling is good, but ride a little hard! The 5th generation Celica is rated higher than the 6th generation introduced in 1994 (the one with the round headlights instead of pop ups)
|
Thats good, ride doesnt bother me, as long as it isnt too noisy i should be happy.
