The City to Shrewsbury - Mapmaker
Suggestions gratefully received for the best route (with the requirement of being in time for a G&T at 7pm this evening just the other side of Welshpool).

M1, M6, M6 relief, south down M6 for 1 junction & then M54

OR M1, M6, M54

OR M40, west round Birmingham, M54.

Many thanks!

Well funny enough mappy I have just done (this morning) part of that journey

M40, M42 (east, north)
Old M6 North (by mistake - I mean to take M6 toll but turned off early in a dream)

The old M6 (at 8:00am) was a dream, no jams throught the roadworks, slight 1/2 mile crawl where it joins m5)

So that was Surrey m25 j11 to Knutsford Cheshire in three hours dead.

Going north I have been doing m40, west round Brum and then m5/m6 no problems for the past four weeks.

Thanks, RF.

Multimap reckons the M1, and that it should take me 2 hours 51 minutes...

M40 seems to be 20 miles further.

Mapmaker,

I used to drive Oxford to Shrewsbury every few weeks but never did it by any of the routes you suggest.

I take the A44 from Oxford to Evesham and on to the M5, up one junction then A449 to Kidderminster around the ring road to the A442 to Bridgenorth and then A458 to Shrewsbury. Some dualling and I know the road very well so I dont find overtaking a problem. I am usually travelling with family so easy access to stopping points is a requirement for us. Probably not the fastest of routes (about 3 hours including stops) but I find it quite a relaxing drive compared to going around Birmingham.

cheers

Used to do this journey a lot when I visited the parents in Wales.

I guess it depends where you start from in London, but I'm within earshot of the M40, so I always did M40, M42, M5, M6, M54

I'd probably consider the M6 toll if I was doing it today. Regardless of when I set off, the bit of M6 just by the RAC greenhouse was always rammed. Otherwise the journey was a doddle. It only got horrible between Shrewsbury and Wrexham.

Obviously too late for your trip today but I have just done the trip this morning from Regent's Park to Shrewsbury as I have done most weeks for the past 10 years - except when abroad.

I always avoid the M1/M6 as it is rare that there isn't a holdup where M6 meets the M5.

I always go M40, M42South M5North for 1 mile to Junction 4 then to Stourbridge, Bridgenorth and Shrewsbury. - this is 11 miles shorter than M5/M6/M54. From the M40/M25 junction it normally takes 2hr 15 min. To get to M40/M25 junction from Central London can take from 20 minutes to 2 hours!!

Thanks. M1 was sticky; M6 had 2 holdups, so went on the toll road which was well worth 2 pounds.

Central London to any motorway can be trouble!
