They won't have anything else to sell soon, MG-Rover sold off the land the factory is standing in last year & parts distribution this year, what could be next ?

My guess that by the end of the decade 'Rover' will just be a badge that is stuck on vehicles made overseas (probably the Far East or India).

Anyone remember those great names of the British electronics industry - Pye and Bush ? A similar fate......?

What they need is cash now, to spend on developing the cars they need to be able to sell tomorrow. The parts business is capable of generating profits for sure, but not if the main car business runs out of money and folds. So selling it off, and the land too, makes good sense. They need to liquidate as many assets as possible.

are rover cars the pits ??

No sajid

no one doubts the rover 75/MG zt is the jewel in the crown.

Its just other cars such as the 25 and 45 have been around for so long, punters want something new and fesh. The face lifts are all fine and good but they are still limited.
It seems they are moving towards a citreon position of a european car maker with the major selling point of value.

The rover 45 is alot of car and spec for the money if we focus on the entry 1.4 car. Compared to similar size cars such as the focus, astra and golf it has greater ammount of equipment and the rover 1.4 is better performing.
But what stops me form buying a rover 45 which i would love to do is 3 things...
1. insurance band - its starts around band 8 - a focus, astra or golf 1.4 starts around band 4 - big difference.
2. - re-sale value - im going to certianly recover less than i would in equivelent european car.

I want to buy british and i want to buy rover, but it doesnt make sense.
what concerns me as a male under 28 is insurance bands. I dont understand why rover have such high insurance bands?
the rover 25 is also particulary bad - and the city rover is band 5! - band 5 for a city car is ridiculous.
The suzuki dealer i was talking to recently at belle vue was putting through the auction in a weeks time 10 suzuki alto's he just couldn't shift. He put down as one of the major factors the insurance costs - band 5 for a 1.0 suzuki!

Also the rover city car is over-priced by 2 grand. Yes im sure they make big profits from every sale but if they compared this to the cost of loss of respect for the badge and future sales the profit line would be significantly reduced.

Anyhow as for the parts thing, can it be any worse? The system is already a mess so surely caterpillar can only improve it.

good luck, and lets offer us something to purchase in the future please.

Maybe the standard repair cost is high. with it being such an old model and parts being like hen's teeth?

I rather like the 75, but is was too expensive when I looked at them, and the other models are just mediocre cars of last century with extra plastic stuck on to tart them up. They are just far too slow at bringing out new models, look how the Rover 600 was out from abot D reg to Y reg. (14 years!)

Totally agree, but being picky

Rover 600 (a.k.a Honda Accord) - 1993 - 1998

Rover 800 - 1986 - 1998 with a significant facelift in 1991. My stepfather had a V reg one in 1999 at a 40% discount, but it probably a year old when he bought it.

Could I suggest that you take another look at the 75; there are some very good deals on pre-face lifted models at the moment (see HonestJohns earlier reply). The MG-Rover direct website might be a good place to start.

I think your comments regarding the rest of the range are rather harsh. I assume you mean the MG saloon range when you refer to the ''extra plastic stuck on to tart them up''. A lot of work has been done on the mechanicals of these cars and they are really quite good, my wife has a ZR 160 (Britain?s best selling hot hatch) and it?s a real hoot to drive. The only criticism I have is the interior, but that has been changed in the 04 model.
Whilst accepting that the 25/ZR and 45/ZS are not the youngest cars around, I think it was Autocar that said that they should be judged for what they are now and not what they were.

Finally I don't no where you got the idea that the 600 was in production for 14 years, if started life in 1993 and was killed off by BMW in 1998 which is 5 years, some say because it competed to well against the3 series.

You might just find the insurance banding is high because spare parts (back to topic!) are hard (sometimes impossible) to source for relatively new MG & Rover cars.

Hence the hire-car bills......

I would like to know why the previous generation Swindon Civic 5 door hatchback is not universally slated like the Rover 400/45. Fair enough, the Honda badge lends more credibility these days, but they have the same dowdy interiors and dated looks. The Honda however, is a well respected 2nd hand buy and still holds its value reasonably well. Not so the Rover. Perhaps if a 45 replacement had come along about 3 years ago then it would be a different story.

No-one I've spoken to from the people my family knows in the local area can put their finger on the spares situation.

It's not a case of inventory, I recently got a set of tappets for a Rover v8 HC just by ringing up the local dealer spares dept. I got them in 24 hours.

My personal theory is the nature of their production, they have a fairly long order lead time for components and as they manufacture to order, I guess spares orders can be eroded in this way if orders pick up. MGR recently had to close CAB1's Longbridge line due to component's running out of stock.

I know Mayflower are a big supplier of body pressings for MGR and they had put this operation into administration which has only recently been sorted. Rover seem cursed with firms going to the wall.

In terms of the cars, the new facelifts have by and large been well received, Longbridge is currently on full weekend shifts to fulfil orders. Hopefully the sales figure might pick up.

The car everyone is waiting for is the 45 replacement, RDX/60, a Peter Stevens design, saloon, hatch, estate, MPV + 'others'. If TWR hadn't have gone bust, it would be on the market now, only another 12 months to wait, also there's almost £800m invested in this from SAIC and MGR.

It really is MGR's last chance saloon this time.
