Does anyone have information on companies offering this service?
|
Best part of twenty years ago I did some consultancy work for a company called 'EconoCruise' - they were based in Rugby and I would say were the market leaders at that time (1986/7). You might want to try a web search based on that name.
|
There are half a dozen companies, perhaps more. I chose VDO for my previous MB, partly because MB fit VDO as original equipment and also because the operating stalk is particularly neat and unobtrusive. A Google search will flush out the other companies for you.
|
Thank you. I tried a google search, without much success. Perhaps I was using the wrong key words. Can anyone else help please?

I fished out a lot of info for my bro-in-law last year. I'll post it if he's still got it.

Try Vehvac ltd in Kent.tel 01732 868080. They market the Rostra cruise control system.

Search for "Adding Cruise Control"
Some bits I saved for reference
Try Ultimate Design of Kettering. (01536 514400)
Or www.ultimatedesign.co.uk
After market systems are available from www.conrad-anderson.co.uk
Tthey also offer a fitting service. I've had one in a previous car and it was acceptable in use but does not really compare for accuracy with any factory fit option.
Search for "Cruise Control for my Mondeo? new Thu 15 May 03 17:42"
There are several cruise-control systems available as after-market products, although I wouldn't bet on your being able to get something exactly like the systems factory fitted by Ford. I would check out the German VDO Tempostat system first; it has a neater control stalk than several other systems I once considered (VDO Kienzle UK Ltd, 0121 326 1234).
dding Cruise Control.
Sorry for crude cut n paste. In a hurry.

What car is it for? You may be able to get the original cruise control grafted on.
The original CC for my Citroen C5 cost £125 to be retrofitted. I don't think there are any more sophisticated systems at any price! (ok, excluding radar distance controlled ones)
|
|
Fitting CC would depend on which car, surely?
For instance, to fit CC on a Vauxhall with a "fly by wire" throttle, all you need to buy is an indicator stalk with the CC buttons on, and a clutch switch (unless it's an auto).
Details here of how to fit:-
forums.vectra-sport.com/viewtopic.php?t=17
Ignore the bit where it mentions needing to be put on Tech2 to enable CC. All you need to do is disconnect the battery beforehand. Once you've fitted the relevant parts, when you reconnect the battery, the ECU recognises the CC adition and enables itself accordingly.

I had a system [by Ultimate Design of Kettering] fitted retrospectively to my motorcaravan [base vehicle VW transporter with 5 cyl 2.5 ltr TDi engine + 5 speed manual box]. Cost £450. Worked quite well for 2 years [5K miles] although occasionally when vehicle came to an up gradient I had to prod the accelerator to remind the cruise to put its foot down. Certainly made motorway driving much more relaxing.
But then it broke. Had to go back to Kettering to get it fixed. A securing bracket was apparently not up to the job. £40. All was well.
Until the week before last. not many more miles done, but once more a failure of something and it's stopped working. Wrote to Ultimate Design over last weekend. Reply awaited.

See my earlier post about a retro-fitted cruise control. Ultimate design's engineers phoned and guided me to diagnose the problem: a snapped length of ball chain connecting the servo unit of the c/control to the throttle. Apparently the lining ball chain as supplied is just too weak, and needs a stronger replacement. Shall get it fixed in due course.
Faith shaken. By and large it works ok, but is pricey. Useful for a campervan.
