How the hell..... - Adam {P}
Hello all,
got a letter this morning from one of those Cherished reg places offering me P60 ADL for £360 plus the £80 transfer fee.

What's wrong with that you may ask. Trouble is, my initials are ADL so I'm curious as to how they have that information. PLUS, there's not really anything special about P60 ADL is there? If it was ADL on it's own then maybe but it just looks like a normal 1996 plate.

Before you state the obvious, I haven't put my name down for anything; I only use personal details for official stuff on the net such as banking.

Cheers

Adam

Electoral regsisters can be bought in electronic form. Simple job to match those with a database of regs they have do a mass mailing.

My wife had a a similar letter from 'Alpha One' offering K60CMH (her initials)for £360 + £80.

In the words of Dire Straits; you get your money for nothing....

£250 direct from DVLA

And Cardew? K60 is gone, but your good lady has a wide selection for the same amount:

No Dosh,
Thanks, if they sold the matching Kevin and Tracey windscreen stickers with these personalised number plates it might give added appeal to those interested in these things.

Looking at the 'CMH' numbers on your link I fail to see why the prices range from £250 to £699 as none seem to have any more significance than the others - or am I missing something?

I vaguely know somebody who's not clued up to a soon to be issued number plate being ideal for him/her.

All morals temporarily switched off at this point.

I'm giving nothing away. It occurs to me that I get it from DVLA and via an agent (to hide the link from me) sell it to him/her.

He/she gets contacted "out of the blue"

Him/her absolutely delighted. Proceeds split between myself and agent.

Switch morals on, and hope for bottle of whisky in exchange. (It will taste so much better!)

Agreed up to point, but making money is how I can afford to spend it on new cars from time to time. No money - no car.

Adam,

When (many moons ago) dvla started selling the reserved plates for profit, all members of my family got letters/junk mail from dvlc
offering us 'personalised' number plates, the letter had an example in a banner across the top of the letter. The amusing part was that it included my own initials (IxL) and stated that my numberplate might be available from NNN pounds. Amusing because I has never been released as a letter in the UK (apart from Northern Ireland).

Adski: P60 ADL - Isle of Wight number - worth having: it will be low-mileage and will have been driven slowly, very slowly.

LOL! Not that unusual then? I was getting paranoid thinking people were watching me. I'm not going to get one - the car I've just got has an Irish plate already on it so it's a little different. Besides - only a number plate isn't it?

Thanks all for your most interesting replies

Had a laught the other week. I was behind a car with three letters and some not-very-unique number. It looked just like a 'regular' plate. However the owner made sure no one made that mistake, he'd had his full name written out across the bottom of the plate - just to make sure you knew it was personalised! You couldn't make it up.

I had an offer for a registration S1 PFR, which are my initials preceded by my SWMBO's first. I broached it with SWMBO, with the expected result. About a year later the same company tried again, but with S2 PFR. Getting better, but the same result. Their market research must be superb, or they have access to the DVLA database.

As per another thread, I am getting a new Scenic tomorrow. First 2 letters of the reg are SB, SWMBO's first initial and mine.

Purely coincidental, car was a pre-reg and we were not aware of registration, but kind of disturbing that there are people out there who would pay a couple of hundred quid just to have some letters on their plate that they could relate to their names!

I did read of some sad git that had his name changed by deed poll to his registration number!

In that case then, I'll change my initials to V J I.

Any suggestions?

Victor John Inverdale?

Victor James Inverdale?

and that's...pretty much it.

Speaking of number plates, there was a sporty Honda thing (silver) at the petrol station last week with no number plates front or rear. Driven by two men. Are some cars / people allowed exceptions? There were spaces, just no plates. I was half tempted to ring the police, but didn't want to waste their time and didn't think they'd do anything anyway.

Oi, less of the sad git if you don't mind.

Tut tut tut Dave...plates get cloned that way! Tell me - what colour and model is your Vectra? The VIN would help too.

Drat, Adski sussed who ZR04 AWQ was ;o)

Anyhoo, it's not a valid registration number as the newer style plates only go from A(whatever) to Y(whatever).

Really? I never knew that - I figured you'd have more sense anyway Dave!
