Had the exact same problem on my Escort.
Could be any number of things. Does it happen shortly after youve started from cold - mine did - could be a problem with the hot air intake (feeds hot air into the engine from the exhaust manifold during 'warm up mode')
Not sure if these engines have a carb, but could be a problem with the auto choke coming off.
Or just something simple like blocked fuel jets.
Try an 'italian tune up' - fork out for a full tank of decent petrol (Texaco or Shell would be my preference) then find a nice empty country lane and thrash the pants off your car - 56-60mph in third gear kind of thrash, using as many gears as poss, but keeping to the lower end to keep the revs up. You wont need 5th gear!!
Should blast out any muck that may be blocking things, and if not at least youve had some fun!!
Try a forum search (top left column on this site) for 'stalling' or 'idleing' or similar to find releted threads.
Let us know how you get on.
Dave.

PS,
dont worry about the warning lights on the dash coming on - they just say that the oil pressure and electics have failed - which they did as the engine stalled.
If they come on when your driving - then panic!!
