Redser,
how do you know there's a switch?
I've got a 2001 Passat on which I've replaced both headlamp bulbs - don't recall seeing anything like a switch.

The headlamp adjusters (if they aren't seized) can be used to angle both beams to the right, however it's a real knuckle scraper even after removing the airfilter box.

Best bet would be to buy headlamp masks from your local motor factor.

There is a switch (a lever, rather than a switch) only if the car is fitted with bi-xenon headlamps. Normal headlamps should be masked off but no-one seems to bother any more. Incidentally the levers on the bi-xenon headlamps are very difficult to get to and involve some dismantling of the air cleaner trunking on the offside.

i think the laws your talking about no longer apply now we got the eu union thingie as my dad used to put yellow masks on years ago and now he doesnt, when i asked he said you no longer need them .hope this helps

I believe you no longer need the yellow bit for France, but if you are going to be driving at night, in rain, fog, continental tunnels, etc, you still need to mask off the part of the beam which is hiked upwards on our nearside (to help spot pedestrians), which will dazzle drivers when driving on the wrong side of the road...

Yes, I can confirm, you do need to mask off your lights when driving on the right, and no, you do not need to turn your lights yellow! Hope that helps...

Current Passats have plastic lenses so beware of adhesives attacking them. I bought a pair of universal beam deflectors which were said to be OK but had water soluble glue- dropped off before the ferry.
Turning the height adjuster fully down seems to be ok and has not given offense to anyone as yet.
