Anybody know what is the minimum tread depth required for Germany? I am currently on 2.5 mm and have been told that I need a minimum of 3 mm. Anyone Know?

Well, according to the AA:-
The legal minimum tread depth in most countries is 1.6mm over the central three-quarters around the whole circumference. However, the AA strongly advises against using tyres with 2mm or less of tread, ideally changing any tyres worn down to 3mm before you go.

The minimum in Germany is 3.0mm but if you are stopprd in one of there frequent checks you will not be permited to drive away if you are on the limit, also any accident be it not your fault you will be partially to blame if you have a vehicle defect. Also Germany enforces the correct tyre speed rating on vehicles.

"Also Germany enforces the correct tyre speed rating on vehicles."
Andy, do you mean the H, V etc ratings on tyres to say the maximum speed they are safely capable of?
Surely you cannot be prosecuted for having tyres rated at 100mph maximum on your Porsche 911 Turbo though? Just because you have a car capable of more than than does not mean to say that you will drive it faster.

Yes the type of tyres is printed in the log book (size and speed rating) and that is what you will have or face a very hefty fine
|
I should have said German car log books, the police refer to manufacturers data for non German cars and trucks which they have on there portable hand computers
|
Thanks for clearing that up Andy.
It shouldn't be a problem for me though as i'm not anywhere near rich enough to own a 911 Turbo! (yet)

I believe you can also be prosecuted in the UK for incorrect tyre ratings - these cater for braking/accelaration performance as well as top speed. Otherwise why don't all the manufacturers fit "h" tyres as standard in the UK.
I am sure someone will confirm.

Speed rating is not just for Speed, it also includes load rating as well. Technically you can fail an MOT on this basis as well, but I've never heard of it.
