Right,
question from my father.
He has been leasing a galaxy tdi 90bhp 6 speed, on a 51 plate and done 63,000 miles. Now its come near the end of its lease he has brought the car (wont tell me how much).
It is now out of warranty, but earlier this year had a new lower engine fitted due to a engine mount failure and when he order it he had the option of side airbags installed.
Condition is good except slight scuff on front bumper and 2 seats look slightly tatty plus a few stone chips in bonnet.
How much can he expect for it?
Secondly, he wants a 5 seater now preferably diesel. He wants it to be spacey but crucially reliable, economical and durable as he intends to keep this next car until for over 8 years.
He doesnt want to spend more than he will get from the galaxy.
He doesnt want a citreon picasso or any saloon or estate car.
What takes his interest is the hyundai matrix, mitsubish space star, ford focus, nissan primera and any thing else which represents value for money and durability.
What do you reccomend he gets?
Also should the auctions be a serious consideration particulary the mobility and ex-leasing sales?
So as you can see, value economy a lowish insurance band and overall a durable long lasting car is needed.
New is prefered but upto a year even 2 years will be acceptable.
Your the experts, advise away.
I will get hiom to post some responses for you!

Simple. Remove the two rear seats of the Galaxy and use them to replace the tatty ones at the front ( I assume I'm right here). Put the tatty ones in the garage. Continue to drive reliable and economical and comfortable diesel with space :-)
Buying another car will simple lose him at least £1,500 in profit to the dealer. Why not invest that in simply running the Galaxy.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
|
I like Espada's solution, but assuming it's a non-starter for whatever reason, crucially:
a. what's wrong with the Galaxy (90 bhp in that won't exactly make it a flying machine, despite the 'travel first class' slogan) and
b. how much does he have to spend on top of it?
You say that he won't have any saloon or estate car - does this mean that a hatchback is okay?

>It is now out of warranty, but earlier this year had a new lower engine fitted due to a engine mount failure and when he order it he had the option of side airbags installed.
Don't tell me, the bolt snapped...! A common 'time bomb' that many Galaxy/Sharan etc. seem to suffer.

Difficult to value your Galaxy. MPV's are going generally for over CAP clean (around 105% on average) at auction with high conversion rates so you could chose this route. Being the 90 bhp model its an LX. I have a feeling for around £8500 ish at auction on this one or £9400 ish privately.

The car is an lx.
He doesnt like the galaxy insurance band (11) which may seem ok for 40+ but area (merseyside) has highest insurance premiums.
Also had to many faults with galaxy, doesnt trust its long term durability, also cloth quality is poor on his (grey colour).
Not suich a comfortable drive, plus would prefere peace of mind from a new car warranty - reason why hyundai is tempting.
He really wants shut of the galaxy and has no use for it any more.
Yes, a hatchback would be ideal or fake mpv.
No badge preference - sadly, the worse the badge the better to save it attracting thieves!
please look back to initial post to see what he is after.

And1's valuation is pretty much what I was thinking as well. A 90 bhp LX isn't a popular specification though, either new or used, so it could be slightly tougher than most to shift. I think the private valuation would be based on some cosmetic preparation for the car, a visit to ChipsAway, etc., and a valet for the inside...
Assuming he has about £3,500 to add to the car then he could look at a Mazda3. Okay, the engine is from a Peugeot, but it's Japanese built, insurance is group 5E (E meaning that it exceeds security specifications - though lots of cars have that now), it should be decent to drive, reliable and very economical.
A bit more expensive would be a Corolla Verso, which would tick all the boxes, although there's not much discount on these - £1,200 from www.drivethedeal.com
If the budget drops to £12k, I'd look seriously at a Skoda Octavia, particularly the new one on the Golf Mk V platform. This is out on 19 July and looks like it could be practical, competent, modern, cheap (ish), certainly with good quality, and the horrible badge (to thieves at least!) It's too early to source a good deal on one just yet, although I imagine that www.tins.co.uk will have some good deals after launch...

Thanks for all the replies
he is still tempted by the hyundai matrix - although feels its expensive for a car which will de-value fast.
looking at ford fusions to. Possibly consider a daewoo tacuma but the price would have to be very good indeed as no diesel option.
Any more help on an alternative is welcome.
|
forgot to add -
he would consider a volvo v40 estate (old one) but would need to be as new as possible (less than a year old ideally).
is there any dealers with old shape v40's left from new?
how much should he expect to pay for a diesel 2 year old model at auction and for arguments sake 30,000 with middle range spec.
|
looks like he is gonna have to decide for himself.
galaxy is definately going.
thanks for all replies.
would be helpful if anyone had news about late volvo v40's.
|
Re-visiting your original post, VFM and durability point to the Focus, which should also be somewhat cheaper to insure than the Galaxy.
|
V40s are relatively expensive and not all that good, in terms of quality, safety, handling, or space.
I would have thought that £8,500 would be a fair auction price for a car like that - although bear in mind that a relatively expensive, diesel estate won't usually be used for 'just' 15k a year and then disposed of at two years old. £10k+ seems to be the price on AutoTrader.
Also, while it's probably fair to say that an unpopular brand will be the kind of car that people will choose not to steal - it may be that car thieves might only be able to steal a Korean car, as they are not known for their advanced security features.
