...in North Yorks?
Firstly, there are a huge number of concrete bases (for those big cantilevered matrix signs) being built. Now I drive it to and from work every day, since I moved up north, and never have I thought "Blimey, the problem with this road is the huge lack of information being constantly relayed to me".
All the matrix signs I've ever seen just say "Don't Drive Tired"
Also the police are really hot on that road. Every morning and evening I see someone getting a roadside talking too. There's always a police car somewhere doing a laser check. I never used to see any police on the M25.
I'm not complaining, as this active policing has finally managed to slow me down to an average 75 mph.

If you are referring to the top end of the A1(M) Dishforth area then the SBC A.1 between Baldersby and Dishforth will be CLOSED to ALL traffic from 2100 Sat 12th to 0700 Sunday 13th June to allow the installation of new Matrix Message Boards.
An 8 mile fully signed diversion via Ripon/Boroughbridge will be in operation.
Re active Plod - better than a speed camera what?

I did wonder when and how they were going to install the sign boards.
That'll mean a further 4 months with big stickers saying "SIGN NOT IN USE"
|
Those matrix signs should be on the dual carriageway sections of the A1 bearing the message "HGV's Don't creep past one another and block the road for 5 miles"
This should be backed up by snipers on overpasses for enforcement.
Rant over.

I've recent experience of these signs being extremely useful when I was diverted off the M2 onto the M20 due to a major accident and junction closure ahead. What I worry about, however is why so many people seem to ignore these warning signs whether they're indicating reduced speed limits or diversions.

"why so many people seem to ignore these warning signs whether they're indicating reduced speed limits or diversions."
Because they have all had experience of where the information is out of date or invalid.

There are two on the southbound M11 just before the end.
I've only seen them used about twice, one of which was to warn of road closures in central London for the Millenium celebrations.
Quite often there is slow or jammed traffic in the North Circular, but it's never on the boards.
Complete waste of space and money.

The most annoying one of these matrix's i've come across is the one at the top of the M40, just before the M42 splits west & north when it displays "Queue ahead" but doesn't tell you in which direction.
