I wonder whether somebody can suggest where I can buy or order some gear oil for my Mitsubishi Pajero truck ...
The rear differential needs special oil for limited slip differentials - there is a red sticker on the truck and I'm told the Japanese characters are a warning that this oil must be used.
Limslip or LS oil is made by just about every oil company and should be sold retail in 5-litre containers for about £20.
However no local motor factor or car parts shop stocks it and none is willing to order it.
I live near Gatwick airport and the nearest supplier I have found is at a place called Erith, in a remote industrial estate on the bleak marshes of the Thames estuary, where I can pick up a 20-litre drum for £32.
I could go to Mitsubishi, of course - but I am too mean to pay them -- I think they demand something like £60 for a 5-litre can. Please, does anybody know of a motor factor or a servicing outfit that is likely to sell me the oil I need in a manageable quantity and at a realistic price?

Erith from Gatwick is about 50 mins to 1 hour, not too sad when you consider how badly you want this LS oil. Its not something you would change at every oil & filter change so it will last a long time. Consider paying the £32 knowing you can get the oil you need, against a fruitless search and paying nowt and still needing the oil.

you might get a stockist in yellow pages under oil /fuel distributers ,or at least they could probably order it for you ,probably at a better price than a motor factor .another possible source would be a local farm machinary dealer

Jaguar dealers (and probably others) sell an limited slip diff additive which you put in with ordinary oil. I've used this in the past on various vehicles with no problem. Just make sure you use an oil of the correct grade. I've only used it with mineral EP though, you'd best check if your vehicle requires synthetic.

Just a word to reinforce any warning about the need for the correct lubricant in an LSD. The Ford Motor Company used the wrong one in the LSD when building my 1984 Capri 2.8i. After 10,000 miles or so, ghastly grinding noises became more and more frequent on tight turns, not noticeably interfering with the efficiency of the LSD but leading ultimately to the replacement of the whole back axle because Ford main dealers could think of no other solution to the problem (they claimed at three successive services that they couldn't hear it -- make of that what you will). Just a few months after that, I found the wrong-lubricant diagnosis in the Capri Club magazine -- an oy vey moment, to say the least.

Probably no use, but I seem to remember that Isuzu Troopers used an exotic LS oil in their rear axle. Whether an Isuzu dealer's prices are any better than Mitsubishi is doubtful.

Yes, Tartanraider, there is a huge price difference for this stuff depending where you buy it. But I think I will do as Pastyman suggests and trek over to Chapter Oils at Erith. It's annoying, there used to be a supplier in Crawley called Senator Oils - but they moved their stock out and only have an admin office now. What did surprise me was that places like Halfords refused point blank to order me up a can.
Oh yes, and the people who import the Isuzu Trooper are the same, I think, as those who bring in Mitsubishi -- so I would probably be robbed just as badly, by another tentacle of the same beast.
Oh well, I guess Erith can't be so very dreadful ...
