All the gauges are working, the mileometer/trip meter is very faint, you can just make out the mileage reading.

Hi
Thats good news then, sounds like a new bulb is called for, you got a haynes manual for it?
|
l've read the haynes manual, seems a straight forward job replacing the bulbs, before jumping in, l was hopeing someone may of had the same problem and could confirm it is just a blown bulb. Thanks for replying.

"seems a straight forward job replacing the bulbs"
I'd put a fiver on it being a very awkward, fiddly and time-consuming job!!
but let us know how you get on!!
And it may be worth replacing all the bulbs you can in that area since if one has gone you can bet your life the others will follow at weekly intervals!
|
Thanks for the confidence boost philw, l know what you mean, l've owned pugs for the last 7yrs, mainly 405's, for all the fiddly jobs l would still buy another.

Hi
If you can see the digits faintly & the gauges are working it sounds like a blown bulb.
What can happen is your gauges go dead, you take the car to Peugeot dealer & they stich you up for £500 for a new set of clocks.
What they didnt tell you is to try rebooting the dashboard first.
For use if they do die on you in the future, but dont try if there working ok.
How to re-boot a Peugeot dashboard.
Find fuse box inside the car & locate the Black & Red fuse with SH in white letters printed on it.
Start engine & let it idle.
Remove fuse SH for at least 10 seconds.
Replace fuse SH & the gauges will go to maximum for a few seconds, then return to normal.

Sorry Duggie - didn't mean to depress you - just remembering replacing bulbs on a BX!!
Just ignore my post and listen to someone who sounds like he knows what he is talking about - Lee!
Good luck anyway!!
By the way Lee - does this trick work with Citroens?
|
Hi
The dashboard re-boot should, never tryied it on a Citroen, But seeing as Peugeot & Citroen are one & the same it should do.
The good thing on a 406 is the lack of a speedo cable to put back on the clock set.
That is a right swine to do on a 405!!!
I had a 94 405 GTX, traded it for a 96 406 GLX BIGGEST MISSTAKE!!!
Got shot of that & got myself another 95 405 Executive.
What year is the 406 in question?
|
Hi
Also when you have the clocks out of the 406, Look at blub that tells you the headlights are on, notice a spare hole next to it?
Stick a bulb in there & the side light warning light will now work, Peugeot saving money again! lol

Hi Lee, the 406 is a 97 2ltr lx, 28000mls, totally spotless the car belonged to an elderly gentleman who used it for the odd shopping run, he cleaned and polished it more than he used it.
l had a very nice 405stdt estate, full leather a/c electric everything, then my wife takes it out had an accident, written off, now replaced with a 405 glxdt estate 96 (nowhere near so good), also have a 405 st 2ltr petrol saloon, this one is immaculate but high mileage, will be up for sale shortly, be sad to see it go, moving up to the 406 with dodgy bulbs.

Hi
You like your high spec 405s then, Ive got a 1995 Executive saloon.
The later 405s arnt so well built are they? Strange hybred 405 / 406 wiring loom as well.
Theres wires everywhere, its frightening if you look behind the radio or the dashboard!
Has your 406 got the keypad & infra red remote keys like the 405 or the radio frequency keys?
The radio keys can be programmed to unlock the keypad for a minute when you use them to unlock the car.
|
It's a small 286 type bulb.
Common problem.
Easy to fit, just need to remove the black surround around the clocks and then remove the instrument pack.

Cheers DL, job for the weekend, looking in the haynes manual looks straight forward, just need to be careful with the fascia trims.
|
Hi Lee, we use to drive bmw 3 series, then l bought the 405stdt estate and been hooked on 405s ever since, if you get the high spec ones their hard to beat, especially for comfort, their also hard to come by in good condition, so if yours is in good nick hold on to it, l find them quite straight forward to work on and service, except the rear brakes, can't say l've noticed a change in the build quality, never had any major rust problems.
The 406 has the keypad and the radio frequency keys, that reminds me l need to get a spare key for this new 405 estate.
|
Just get the proper bulb before doing the job.
They're only a couple of quid from a Peugeot Dealer.

Hi
It might be cheaper to get a pair of second hand infra red plips & the receaver from a scrappy, then getting a new plip coded to your 405 from Peugeot.
The metal key part just slides out from the plastic plip part with the screw on the back removed & the receaver is a 5 minute job in the roof panel.
