Does anyone know how to word a bill of sale for use in the private sale of a motor vehicle, or know of a 'free' template available online.

This is what I have used. It is taken from the aa, but I have added some more bits.

Might be worth including something about the vehicle being free from any outstanding payments?

Personally I wouldn't put mileage onto it. I'd be very very cautious about putting my name to a document with mileage on it, as buyer or as seller. Even with ones own car, owned from new, one cannot be certain that it hasn't done a long run with speedo cable disconnected whilst in the garage.
If you must, then 'recorded mileage as per speedometer.'
Or am I paranoid?

Not paranoid, just cautious! Just changing the words to "recorded mileage" should be adequate.
Frankly, there's so much that could go in it could get like war & peace. IMHO, if it just keeps to facts, then there should be a minimal need for lots of botty-covering phrases.
