Glad to be back, been away for 2 months. got a problem with a mates BMW 316i compact, M plate. The air bag warning light has come on and stayed on, any ideas how to reset it pls? Thanks.

I think your mate should be getting the airbags checked, rather than looking for a method of resetting. The light is there for a reason and therefore could be indicating a fault with the system. I would assume he would like the use of the airbags in an accident rather than the convenience of having the light extinguished.

The only way to reset the airbag light is to get a BMW dealer (or an independant dealer with the relevant software) to reset it using the GT1 or DIS diagnosis computer. They can normally tell you the cause of the light coming on while you wait, though sometimes diagnosis can be more involved. Once the light has come on once it will usually come on again unless the problem is fixed. Airbag monitoring systems are very sensitive so the slightest poor connection will trigger the light.

IIRC airbags should be replaced around the 10 year mark.untill then light will not go out.please correct if wrong?

Sorry I may have been mistaken in my earlier reply. I think the compact has a non diagnosable airbag system. This system is identified by the warning light being in the steering wheel rather than the instrument cluster. If you have the early system the light can only be extinguished by replacing the faulty component. Hope this helps. BMW airbags do not need changing on a time basis, though some manufacturers recommend a time based change.

according to the handbook for my skoda, airbags and seatbelts have a life expexctancy of 15 years
hmmmm.......
value of 15yr old skoda in 12 years time - bobbins
cost of new airbags and seatbelts in 12 years time - two or three grand ? more ??
lord help anybody wanting to keep a current car as a 'classic' in the future - if you've got a proper mini or mk1 cortina, even a marina, or anything older than that, there's not a lot that can't be fabricated by a man with a hammer or a big press, but in 10 years time, can you imagine trying to get an ecu for a fiat barchetta, or a wiring loom for a renault megane ?

just 'cos I know what I'm saying doesn't mean I know what I'm talking about

You could remove the bulb and wear your seatbelt. Cheapest option.
