My 2000 (W) Audi A4 pick up a nasty habit of stalling when in neutral and in low revs, it happens when I am driving and sellect neutral (traffic lights, junction, etc). The revs go down to 400 rpm and sometimes junp back to a normal 800 rpm, other times the engine just stops.
Any ideas? Could it be bad fuel? (I'll try to fill up with Shell Optimax or another premiun unleaded).
Cheers

Try an Italian Tune up - might just do the trick!

Thanks DL, I did not know what an "Italian Tune Up" was, however, few minutes on the internet and I am now an expert.
I have put an additive to clean the fuel injection and will do the "Italian job" later on this week.

Sounds very similar to the behaviour of my now-departed Audi 100, which was caused by the cumulative effects of short trips and was cured instantly by VAG's own fuel additive (part number G 001 700 03). Let us know if you solve the problem.

I went for a long drive yesterday (240 miles) and gave the Audi the "Italian treatment", I also fill the tank and added a fuel injection cleaning additive (Roger, unfortunately I'd bought something else from Halfords).
I have not noticed a significant difference and the engine cut off few times on my 12 miles journey to work this morning. If the forum has no additional advice I guess it may have to go to a garage to get it sorted! Whatever happens I'll let you all know the outcome (and cost!).

This may work for you - it worked in the case of my wifes Golf which was behaving just like your audi cutting out as you described.
I am not familiar with your engine but in my wifes case problem was resolved by removing and replacing air filter and cleaning out engine breather tube apparatus attached - the latter was blocked with gunge.
Kind Regards

I had a similar problem with my volvo S60, after long journeys, or a long time on the motorway, the car would cut out at traffic lights or at junctions.
Try changing the 'idle control valve and the crank case breather pipe' This solved the problem on my Volvo.
Hope it works

Back to basics, clean the throttle butterfly and housing out with proprietary carb cleaner and a toothbrush. Not sure if this is a complete 'fly-by-wire'system or just a motorised throttle flap for the idle but you may need someone to adapt/reset the throttle body with VAG 1551/2 or Vag-com.

Apologies if this is a silly question, but can carb cleaning be done in situ without harming the engine or does throttle housing have to come off.
I had the same problem on my wifes golf (1.4) which was solved by replacing air filter and cleaning out breather tube which was blocked with gunge. I assume breather is linking crankcase to inlet manifold. How does it affect idle control if it is blocked.
Kind Regards

Yes, can be done in situ. What seems to happen is that the throttle plate is set by the manufacturer to allow a known amount of air to bypass the plate to effect a basic idle speed. For arguments sake lets assume that the vehicle in question utilises a motorised throttle plate i.e. the throttle is opened by a small motor in response to inputs of the throttle pedal sensor. The ECU knows what angle is required within a certain parameter to give the correct idle speed. All fine and dandy when the plate and venturi are squeaky clean but when oil residue from the breather builds up on the surfaces the throttle has to be opened more and more to compensate to the point where it runs out of angle. If the Positive Crankcase Vent(PCV)port is also blocked more air will be required past the butterfly to maintain the idle compounding the problem. Cleaning the venturi and plate and clearing the breathers restores the status quo in most cases. Sorry if its a bit simplistic....

Thanks, Andrew.
I followed this thread to completely resolve the same problems in an A4 V6 that had just been returned from the main dealers after an £1118 bill for a new ECU/temp sensor/sparkplugs. £1118 but it still stalled at rounabouts!!!!!! Replacing the brittle crankcase ventilators and cleaning the gunge off the throttle housing (with Wynnes xylene/methanol spray)worked a treat.
Thank you thread!!

Most interesting, my N reg A4 has recently started oscillating between 500-1000 rpm for about 5 cycles until it steadies at 900rpm. I'll check out the breathers and throttle housing.

i have same issue on A6 1998.
took it to audi garage and they said throttle body needed cleaning. its a common VAG fault. got local garage to do it for half the price.
problem fixed

My garage (Moss Moor, Stoke-on-Trent, 01782834804) traced it to a spilt breather which they repaired.
