1996 model needs extra key BUT.... red key is lost. Realistically, what is it likely to cost - from a lock expert rather than a FIAT dealer?

We have a MkI Punto in the household and have been told that without the Red master key you can't program a new spare.
I maybe wrong - a quick call to a Fiat dealer should clear it up.

UPDATE +++++ my local friendly auto locksmith reckons he can clone the key for £35. I'll let you know.

Well, I consider it a dealer scam. My son has a 1996 Punto - no master red key, only the regular blue one - and wants to buy a spare key. Appears that it will cost a fortune as FIAT dealer will replace loads of ECU components etc. to get round the problem at a cost of hundreds of pounds. Well.. I've just had the blue key cloned by a locksmith for £35 and the new one works perfectly. I can't help wondering if there's a problem waiting for my son down the line but so far so good. Don't panic!

The problem is that somebody has the red master key and if they can find the car they can come along and steal the car with the key which may invalidate your insurance and hence no payout. Although this may not be such a problem as the car is 8 years old and may not be worth much.

Good point Kith - though previous owner is not in local area and - as you say - car is not worth very much, certainly as a resale. I just want to make sure others are not ripped off by being told they need to spend hundreds for a task that's really worth a few tenners. Cheers.
