Changed my oil today, and it made me wonder whether I could get the oil cheaper. Although I have a small fleet of vehicles (well, three) they all use different oil so I can't really buy in great bulk.
So does anyone know what chains sell cheap oil to the public? 10W/40, API SL rated, semi synth.
Might be useful to compile a list, so I'll start.
Vauxhall parts, £15.22/5l = £3.04/litre (inc VAT)
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark
Why bother buying oil to do the job yourself? Look at the National Tyres website: 10w-40 semi synthetic oil and a filter, fitted to your car for £15.00!!
If you want a fully synthetic oil and filter: £25.00!!
A superb service in my opinion.
cheers

"Why bother buying oil to do the job yourself? "
Because it is enjoyable and you know it has been done properly?.

The oil you get from Vauxhall can be had for £35 for 4x5 litres if you buy four bottles.
The fully synthetic they do for £41 for 4x5 litres.

My local CD Bramall (Dewsbury) were doing 4x5 litres of Vauxhall semi synth for £21.15 cash.

Hi,
This may sound silly, but have you tried Asda? The last time I was in there they had Texaco Havoline motor oils in. The grades available were 15w/40, possibly 10w/40, but I could be wrong. The specification included VW 501 01 but I?m not sure about the API spec or whether it was mineral or semi synthetic. But with VW recommendation, it shouldn't be bad.
Other oils include Texaco Havoline for diesel engines and Carlube 15w/50, amongst the other cheap and nasty looking stuff. The prices were good, with Texaco oils being about £2.00 for 1 litre with the bigger cans working out slightly cheaper. Best go to your local store to check price and availability.
Although available to the public, but not widely so, Costco can have excellent deals on Motor oils. If you can/are eligible for membership I would recommend it. They sell Castrol GTX Magnatec 10w/40 for about £15-16 per large can, or chevron supreme 15w/40 in 25ltr barrels which work out at about 0.70p to 0.80p a litre. (Again carries VW 501 01 but I don't think it meets API SL)
I apologise that these aren't really what you asked for, but thought it worthwhile mentioning.
Hope this is of some help, Daniel

Thanks all for the comments...
You're right, Robertson, Halvoline in Asda doesn't meet API SL - checked before.
205 litre barrels are no use to me as I have nowhere to store them, I'd need three (all three vehicles use different grades) and it would take me 22 years to use each one ;-) 25 litre cans might be worth considering, thanks.
I will probably use National Tyres or Forumla 1 for an oil change on my runabout, but on my Rover 220 turbo, I have _never_ had a garage use the right oil filter (except main dealer). They always use the one for the NASP, which is smaller (and cheaper). So prefer to do it myself and have it done right. And as Trancer said, it's a nice job in the sun. :-)
Cheers,
Mark

:: it does! acording to

www.havoline.com/products/na/motoroils.html
which gives more information than i can find for castrol products on the web!

:: why three different grades? are you sure this is necessary?

Hi Dalglish,
:: it does! acording to
You're quite right. I notice it's an American site and I wonder whether the UK spec could be different. I'll check next time I'm at Asda :-)
:: ? 205 litres? do you mean 25 litres?
Defender suggested "a barrel at a time(205 ltr)"
:: why three different grades? are you sure this is necessary?
One's a motorbike with wet clutch, so needs motorbike oil. The two cars could use the same oil; I tend to use cheaper stuff in the runabout but I suppose if I could get the good stuff cheaper than I'm getting the cheap stuff for now, I'd use that.

or is it available to all and sundry incl vat?
The vauxhall prices are incl. VAT, it is a trade offer, but I have had the offer at two dealers, each on several occsions without a trade card or any kind of spanish inquisition. I just say, Is this oil still on special offer if you buy four?
I think they sell it and make out on their system they sold it to the local taxi firm.

hi guys I only put 205 ltr price in to show the oil price without the packaging as it were .didnt think you would buy that much at a time but yellow pages under" oil fuel distributors " will show companies also supplying lube oils, well it does in ours so hope this helps

I think the Costco prices are even cheaper than quoted above. I buy Chevron 5Wx40 full synthetic which meets all the VAG numbers and I paid 10GBP for 4 litres. Castrol GTX 15Wx40 mineral is about 7-8GBP for 5 litres and just recently bought 4.5 litres Castrol Magnatec 10wx40 for the wife's car. Don't remember the exact price, but it must have been less than the full synth Chevron for me to get it. Prices don't include VAT.
I keep thinking I should make a list of all the motoring items for sale there along with prices for use in threads like this, but I never remember to do it when I am there.

Not sure where you live but East Anglia factor chain Wilco have an own brand (Comma from Esso)10W40 SJ/ACEA specced oil was £6.49 for 5 Litres.
Used it for the last 5 years with no problems at all.
Why pay more??

Hi Charles,
> SJ/ACEA specced oil was £6.49 for 5 Litres.
> Why pay more??
'cos I want SL rated oil (as specified by Rover) - turbocharger is far too expensive to replace to make it worth risking lower grade oil. :-)

The point I was making is that you can get some decent quality oil for little money if you look around.
Engine oil is normally sold on two different factors to the vast majority of customers:
1. Price
or
2. Brand
Whereas the only factors that should be taken into account when buying oil is the viscosity and the specification. Once these are confirmed then you can start looking for the cheapest deal.
Hope you're successful in getting a good deal.

I agree 100% - and that's why I asked in my original post for sources of cheap 10W/40 API SL rated oil :-)

Because the best oil at the moment is graded SL, and people want the very best oil. Comma charge about £10 for the 10w-40 API SL/ ACEA A3 B3 FOR 5 LITRES. Notice that the cheaper comma is an A2/B2 which is a bit inferior to the A3/B3.
Oddly enough, my father used a cheap french supermarket brand diesel oil (Auchan brand) which cost about £5 for 5 litres when on offer and is an API SJ/ ACEA A3 B4. Using it for years, the car now has 260,000 miles and runs really well. As long as it is changed regularly and you top in up/ check the levels, any oil will do as long as it has some quality to it.

just for interest, I was in France at the weekend and bought:
Mobil 10x40 for ?19.22 (£12.77)
5l own brand 15w40 for ?8.90 (£5.91)
and a Bosch wiper blade for ?16.11 (£10.70)
The oil was cheap enough but I wasn't so sure about the wiper blade (although it is a big one).
Currency conversions from xe.com)

Oh, the Mobil was 5 l of semi synth
And fags are ?4.5 (£3) per pack now... :-(
Still, had a great weekend at le Mans watching the LM pre-qualifying, which included a few chats with Johnny Herbert and Alan McNish :-)
