Ford Focus C Max Tdi cvt productproblems - johnr
Hello all,
I've been trying to buy a C Max/ghia Tdi CVT from a mai ford dealer. They don't have any coming as there may be "problems" with it. I pointed out than the non-cvt versions still being built. He could not confirm if the cvt transmission was the problem.

Only the 1.6 Tdi comes as the auto/cvt.

Anyone shed light on this?
Thanks

I asked a while back if anyone knew anything abt these -- see www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=19198&...f -- no answers.

Have you found any reports of any of them ever actually being made?

thanks for the respose. Yes, some have been made as the dealer told me that they sold the LX version that was uses for demo.

The main dealers are expecting re-supply in approx Sept.

I have seen a few on sale - new imports, but not many and not a ghia - plus i don't want an import version.

When i queried it must be the cvt that is the prob - intially rep said no - but when i said that the non-cvt were available by the thousand - he agreed that it "must" be a prob with the cvt but was unable to confirm this.

If true as it appears it is - FMC have managed to keep the story secret.

The new fiesta has the normal auto box and no probs re availabilty. The previous fiesta had a cvt I think and it was rubbish and for the last few years of it's life they did not do the cvt auto i think.

The C Max auto is only available on the 16Tdci - i will keep an eye out and erpost/check here for more news!

Thanks

I don't know johnr's reasons, but I can see two things which make this model attractive.

* I think it's the only diesel CVT of any size or shape, other than those made by Audi

* It may also be the only diesel automatic MPV in this size -- the only others I'm aware of would appear to be much bigger, such as the Espace

i want to buy as i will get a large dicount and the manual versin i sat in once drives/handels well - and u got the commanding viwe in the high driving position with car like handling and economy -good torque - shoul retain it's value well if we sold in 4/5 years beaing in mind the 255 disount i will get. the variation in seating, electric parking brake, auto lights/wipers,etc all make it good value in metallic at 14k-ish. FMC are bound to sort out the probs i hop.

should read approx 25% discount and the size of car is just right - ie, not too small/big.

I dont understand this. Fords record with CVT's is not good, you seem to have found there is a problem with this application as well. yet you seem hell bent on getting one?

Fords have had probs before with CVT's, in fact all manufacturers have. Ford have also had probs with it's TDCI engines, especially the electrics. If I were you I'd buy a Honda Stream, has everything the Ford has, except all the problems that will have you on first name terms with the Service manager, plus you get a decent performance with 170BHP on tap. Might cost you a few quid extra in gas, but a small price to pay for decent build quality and reliability.

Not sure about the high driving position, it's about 2" higher than anything else. Want a high driving position, then you need to get a Landcruiser.

thanks for that - i did not know about the probs with thr tdci engines.

the c max is about 7" higher than a foucus and good on economy.

from the responses here - i will investigate similar cars.

i will not post on this thread again unless i find out what the problem is - i will read only.

thanks again

I missed this discussion when I looked earlier, hence my note to HJ.

When I spoke to my dealer about the C-Max 1.6 TDCi CVT, he said although listed in the brochure as available on the Ghia model, Ford had a technical problem with the EPA (electronic parking assist) interferring with the auto transmission.

Also, I had to wait nearly 12 weeks from placing my order to delivery. This is because I wanted the ZETEC model, and Ford hadn't actually started building these when I originally placed the order. Having said that, it was well worth the wait.

One thing to be aware of ... I have found that pulling away from a standing start to be sluggish at times (as I stated in my email to HJ). In this situation, there is a tendency to use the kickdown feature on the accelerator, and there is a delay of about a second before it kicks in. BUT, when it does kick in, it really goes. This could be dangerous because of the short delay, and can take you by surprise when negotiating, say, a roundabout.
However, once you've got used to it, it's great.

The Zetec does not have a standard feature of the electronic brake, or the LX version for that matter. i believe it is the CVT, as other posters have already mentioned the problems. The old fiesta had a cvy - load of rubbish. FMC, should come clean.

HJ has contacts, any news? What about the poor guys that have already got the tdci auto.

It's now available soon in the 2:0 litre version as well.

HJ

According to my Ford information production started 6th October 2003 so there should be a few about. I'm not aware of any problems but I'll ask a few contacts.

They have also introduced the 2:0 Tdci cvt.

Seen Zetec cvt imports - so they are/were being built.

In the early 90s Ford introduced CVT on the Escort for about 5 minutes, then rather quietly withdraw it from the market. There were numerous attempts to relaunch the product, always accompanied by early reports of transmission failure and another withdrawal.

Ford transmission people really don't seem to be able to get their heads around CVT on cars of this size. Personally I wouldn't touch one with a very long stick.

A couple of years back Ford ditched their automatic transmission interests - they sold the whole lot to ZF. So Ford auto = ZF auto.

Having said that, ZF have their own problems with the Ecotronic CVT - numerous failures on the Mini.
