Just spotted the new RenaultSport Megane 225 at £15,500 at one of the new car discounters. Surely a hot contender in the value-for-money hot hatch stakes?

Other front runners - Civic Type R, Leon Cupra R......cheaper and more powerful than both of them. Suppose Alfa 147 GTAs might eventually drop even further in price, but then purchase price is not the real cost(!)

Anyone considering a punt on the ample-reared Renault?

I wouldn't bet on it being able to last the distance - if it were a horse - it wouldn't being able to finish the national, it would probably refuse at the 4th fence

To be honest, given the discounts on the rest of the Mégane range, it's only to be expected. If it's your company car though, you'll still be taxed on £20k.

Well the CTR is a high revving nutter car, and therefore probably attracts a buyer with different priorities than the very civilised Mégane. However, the Leon is a very similar concept - torquey turbo, grand tourer rather than high revving B-roads, and in that sense is threatened a bit. However, it seems they are selling all the Cupra Rs they want to, so it's probably no big deal and there are plenty who would have a Cupra because it's a value Golf GTi, simply because of that.

As the hot hatch treatment reminds me of the R19 16v, one of my favourite cars of all time, I love it - but I am prepared to be in a minority opinion here.
