I still can't locate what appears to be an intermittent whine on my Golf.
I've jacked all four wheels up tonight and spun them and apart from a slight grating on the front ones and a slight 'catching' noise on the back ones they seem fine.
Can anyone suggest what I should look for next please?

Please explain the noise and the circumstances under which it becomes apparent?
If you turn corners (at speed) does it come and go - depending upon which way you are turning?
If so, it's a wheel bearing. Most probably a front.

I've tried to 'encourage' the noise by going at 'speed' through a couple of roundabouts but the noise doesn't seem to fluctuate with this.
Both front wheel bearings were replaced some 6,000 miles ago but the noise is very similar to the one I recall when the wheel bearings went.

Might be a rear bearing?
....unless the hub flange was damaged (easy to do) when the front bearing was replaced? All it takes is a small burr on the bearing mounting flange to ruin a new bearing in 6K

Apart from what has been said.a rear worn bearing is noticeable ie directional so you should be able to hear if it was.from what yu said it may be diff whine but you are not very clear as to what happens or where it comes from.not easy I know?.
|
It is more noticeable at around 30mph then it is less apparent over this speed.Funnily enough this is almost identical to what happened when I had to replace both fron ones a year or so ago.
If it was a wheel bearing wouldn't I be able to tell if I jacked the car up and spun each wheel? There is nothing noticeable.

How many miles it done?.you cant always tell by just spinning the wheel.you need to rock it from side to side.from what you said DL may be right.incorrectly fitted bearings wear out rather quick.diff whine gets worse the faster you go.
|
It's done ,80,000.
It went through the MOT last week. the chap who did it is known to be fussy so would he not have picked it up if it was a wheel bearing?

As DL said more info needed.I would guess at diff whine in early stages but need more?
|
Don't take the MOT for granted - often the car has to be driven for a faulty bearing to be heard. I have MOT'd cars that I know exhibit a droning bearing but on the ramp spinning the wheel shows nothing. Finding which bearing is noisy can be a bit of a lottery - experience comes into effect here.
Golf wheel bearings? Both front and rears give trouble - the rear bearing is a cinch to replace (DIY job) but the front requires a hydraulic press - not so nice!

It starts at 25 mph and carries on to 30 mph. It then reduces to a point that I don't notice it above the tyre noise. Apart from that it's difficult to explain.

Jack up each wheel in turn - use axle stands - and apply a large screwdriver to the rear of the hub. Spin the wheel and listen to the hub by putting the clean handle of the screwdriver to your ear.
Repeat for each hub and you'll soon pick up the noisy one.
