Merc Specialists-Who do you recommend ? - Mikek
Have made up my mind to move away from Merc dealerships.
Can anyone provide some recommendations please of Merc specialists. Previous threads recommend Andy Gayle in Brum.
Heard mixed reports of George Fraser in NW London.
I live/work in London/H.Counties area and would be prepared to travel for good service at a reasonable price.

Appreciate any good/bad experiences that you may have.

I have more or less arrived at the same conclusion. The quality of the service I have received I can't fault, but the cost is too much.

HJ's Good Garage Guide reccommends SS Motors in Weybridge (01932 821555) I have never used them , but if you decide to, I would be interested to know how you get on.

You do not need to have your Mercedes serviced at a franchised main dealer to maintain its warranty. Apprarently that restriction was removed by DaimlerChrysler earlier this year though for some inexplicable reason they have not told their customers:

mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=6131

--MB main dealer A service for a C200K 2002: £285 + VAT :70 minutes but £85 per hour ('someone has to pay for the branding').

--Good independant dealer A service for a C200K 2002: £145 + VAT as per MB A service schedule : 60 minutes 'you only pay for the actual labour'.

OFT recommend using a reputable service outlet--ask your trading standards office for a list of such outlets who conform to codes of practice. Get it in writing that they can service your car to MB requirements/parts (may help to bring your own MB parts anyway-why not? Helps everyone. And keep the parts receipt in case MB start whinging!).

Let me expand on this:

This is part of the new Block Exemption rules that came into force in October last year.

Non MB repairers have to apply to become 'Authorised Repairers' complying to an agreed set of standards for premises, training and special tools.

Even the existing dealer network for all VM's have to be audited for compliance to these standards.

That's it in a nutshell.

Hi Charles,

That's what I thought so I wrote to MBUK for clarification; the response contradicted the OFT report about the block exemption changes. So I e-mailed MBUK?s response to the OFT and then all hell broke loose: MBUK were being economical with the truth.

Bottom Line from the mouth of the OFT:

-Any independent service centre can apply to be an authorised MB service centre. MBUK call them ?repair centres? and they are available at MBUK?s web site.

-You can have your MB serviced by *ANY* service organisation providing the work is done according to MB criteria. OFT recommend using a reputable independent, and get them to confirm this criteria in writing.

If you are sceptical then email the OFT: enquiries@oft.gov.uk .
