Hello!

If Arosa = Lupo
and Ibiza = Polo,
does new Altea = New Golf?
Is that a good or bad thing?

Thanks

I think Altea = Touran.
Will be a new Leon in 2005 to take on the Golf

But the Touran is huge, and the Altea isn't.

I think I've found some info now that says it's based on the new Golf, so I'll just sit back and wait for HJs review and go and visit it at the motor show in May.

(PG might have fallen in love again, and this one comes out just as I'll be looking for a new car.)

I think Touran just looks much bigger because its boxy compared to the swoopy Seat. The Altea is being marketed as an MPV and built on same platform as Touran so size-wise they can't be that different.

The Altea may be based on the cordoba (polo platform), like the new vx meriva mini MPV is based on the corsa. I am not sure though.

Platform sharing is not unigue to VAG. Ford do it between Ford/Jag and Volvo, and I should think GM do to. Its a great way of cost saving.

And Ibiza = Polo = Fabia !

Altea is definitely based on the Golf platform, not Ibiza/Polo. It won't be quite as practical as the Touran (does the Touran get 7 seats? Max of 5 in the Altea), but seems a lot more stylish & desirable and will probably handle better, as this is what they're trying to use as its USP. Could still be worth waiting for Leon II though, if you don't need all that MPV practicality.

I got the idea from www.carpages.co.uk/seat/seat_altea_03_02_04.asp that the Altea was build on a completely new platform.

"It is the first vehicle to be completely developed within the Audi Brand Group since it was established in 2002."

Not sure how to read this now.

Looking at the length on the Altea it could be a golf, but my old polo estate was not much shorter than the Mk4 golf.

Well I've fallen hook line and sinker for the "it's not an MPV it's an MSV (multi sports vehicle)" line!

It's got 5 doors though, and I don't like that, so I'll have to see what it looks like when I get a chance to see one.

It might be worth waiting for the mk2 Leon as I suspect the front end will look very similar - this will become Seat's family look. The current Leon is 5dr only but maybe the new one will have a 3dr as befits the sporty image they are trying to build.

Length/size of car ain't no guide to the platform it's based on. The platform determines hidden fundamentals like suspension and other 'chassis' components. Wheelbase is just as variable as the overhangs either end.

Prime example: Audi TT = VW Golf. Well, same platform/floorpan...
