Bentley Continental GT - CM
Just seen my first one in the flesh and...yuk, yuk, yuk. What a truly horendous looking car and one that does no justice to the Bentley tradition.

I can assure you that I won't be buying one.

I saw my first last weekend - only the rear though. Not very pretty and why does the high level brake light go all the way across the top of the rear window? Awful.

so you won't be buying one either then?

I can't agree CM, I had a good nose round one parked near me [Dale Winton's I think!] and I thought it was magnificent [the car not Dale]

I also saw the new Rolls recently - yikes - the GT is huge but the roller - it could give Red Ken's smokin' buses a run for it's money size-wise

p.s. I won't be buying one either though.

Sat in one at friendly local Bentley dealer.

Surprisingly compact - at least it looked compact next to the Arnages. Rear seats positively cramped. Looks are subjective, but I thought it very handsome in the metal, more distinctive to my eye than the SL, but no match for the DB9. Interior sumptuous, obviously, but i thought it lacked the style of, say the new Range Rover.

The Salesman saw my Impreza and started describing the GT's performance. "Quicker than a 996 or an F360" , apparently.

Unfortunately, they are only giving test drives to those realistically able to afford one, which firmly excludes me.

Second that. I know looks are subjective but I've seen a couple, one in solid red and the other in metallic silver grey - the metallic one looked far better IMO. However even so, it can't hold a candle to the new DB9 in whatever colour!

IMO the Bentley looks like a Bentley should - solid, refined and if anything rather conservative. The AM on the other hand looks exactly as it should - suave, stylish and very exciting....reminds me when I first saw the DB5 in Goldfinger as a 7 yr old.

Memories!

In my youth I used to wash a DB5 most Saturday mornings ( with DEB shampoo ) for a rich guy across from my place of work - I got 5 bob a time and a few lifts home in it - awesome! I would have paid the owner to wash it.

In the 70s, I worked for John King - later Lord King of British Airways..he was a hunting, shooting friend of David Brown (the DB in DB5).

John King ordered a DB5 or 6, waited months for it....the producers of a James Bond movie asked if they could borrow it for a scene where Big Tam (Connery) did a skidding shot in Edinburgh Castle...the stunt man lost it and did some serious remodelling to the car.

John King was not pleased and the driver was not chuffed either.

Saw DB5 in the flesh when an acquaintance, in his remaining few days at liberty, gave someone a lift to work early one morning. Plumes of spray from the wheels - grinning madly. However, it wasn't his. As not many DBs about in Castle Bromwich, his collar was felt soon after. Thought Bentley looked very suitable, but not for the likes of us.
