Read a letter in the Times today that mentions that 'French-style' kilometre signs are replacing the mile markers on stretches of the M6 motorway in Staffordshire and Cheshire.
I know that it was illegal in this country to have road signs in kilometres but is the thin edge of the wedge ?

authority or agency maybe breaking the law?

clearly illegal according to tinyurl.com//25j8s
whilst i suppose i could tolerate obsticals ahead in metres signs in km for distances is a no no for me, i work out everything else in imperial except the temperature. when it's cold it's in 'C but when it's warm i prefer 'F
talk about land of confusion!

Funny that as the size of signs shown in Traffic Signs and General Directions 2002 are all in metric.
Plus I doubt that a Marker Post is an approved sign under the Regs, just merely a distance guide.

Does this refer to the small distance marker posts? havent they always been metric?

Larger distance signs are certainly appearing on M6 in Cheshire at present, copying the distances on the existing posts. But those always were metric (every 100m) measured in Km from (I suppose) the start of the M1 near London. Previous threads have discussed the accuracy of these, as after accidents or repairs some are out of position or just lost.
