Having had the misfortune to rip the exhaust system off an almost new, previously owned car on a ferry in Cornwall, I am planning a trip to Scotland and was wondering if any members of the B.R. have experience of the Scottish ferries to the Western Isles (Islay, Jura and Ghia) and how much ground clearance is required.???

No experience of the specific routes you mention but never had any problem on Caledonian MacBrayne's vessels elswhere. Their ferries are well crewed and all the longer routes now load via linkspans.

We did Island hopping a few years ago - Oban - Islay - Islay Mull of Kintyre - Mull of Kintyre - Arran - Arran - Ardrossan. Had no problems at all with grounding. The trip from Oban to Islay was stunning - loads of dolphins followed the boat and you can spot all the distilleries as you cruise down the coast! We stayed at the Harbour Inn on Islay - which is next to Bowmore distillery!

Toured Outer Hebrides via Uig , Lochmaddy ,Lochboisdale and Barra in a well laden BMW Touring around ten years ago.
No problems on the then new RORO ferry and ramps.
