Is £1300 a sensible asking price for a Citroen ZX Aura 1.9TD 93K with 150 000 miles and in reasonable condition (lots of reciepts, everything works) ? It is a private sale from someone who claims to have followed the HJ suggested service schedules for cars, doing most of the changes themselves.
Any comments?
Thanks

anything is too much for a ZX....

I disagree. The ZX is a much underated car. If this were a 306 Turbo diesel the price would be double this (at least), but mechanically it is almost identical.
It may have faults, but if everything works then it's a good car for not much more than bangernomics money.
The engine a gearbox etc. is easily capable of 200K+ miles, with a proper eye kept on the cooling system.

So long as it has a full service history I would go for it. We have had my wifes ZX from new (1992J) and it has been the most reliable, economical car we have ever owned. Still has its original exhaust and battery, all it has cost us is a set of discs, 2 sets of pads and both handbrake cables.

The problem with the cooling system as metioned is relatd to the heater matrix which is a pig to change. £ 800 is more like it.

Simon,
Hope you've seen the Car by Car Breakdown on this site for the ZX.
Here are my personal experiences from working on them, also from feedback within the Citroen Car Club.
The price is OK with a decent history. 150,000 miles is too much for many folk (not me) so at auction I would expect to see it under £1000.
If the engine has been looked after it will easily do another 70,000+ miles.
There should be no hint of rust. The interior should be in good order.
Important items to consider are.......
Timing belt at 50,000ml intervals, tensioner at every other belt change.
Water pump may be needed at second or third belt change.
Coolant should be changed two yearly.
Heater matrixs do go anything after 100,000mls. They are a fair job having a trade time to change from 7-10hrs. At £50/hr plus the matrix you can get up to a major bill.
Change brake fluid two yearly.
Front discs may be needed every 50,000mls.
Rear brake cylinders (on drum models) may fail after 60,000mls.
Handbrake cables can fail after 80,000mls.
Front suspension bushes are often needed after 60,000mls.
Diesel fuel filter housing cover can distort giving rise to air leaks..easy/cheap to cure.
Glowplugs perhaps needed every 75,000mls
Diesel fast idle "waxstat" ofen sticks in slow or fast position after 75,000mls.....easy/cheap to replace.
Tailgate lock solenoid assy can fail after 100,000mls...easy to replace.
We have a ZX and a Golf in the family, both 1993 and around 90,000 miles, in similar "retirement" useage. The Golf is rusting first and has suffered more broken interior trim bits yet it would sell quickly at twice the price. Also the ZX provides the more modern driving experience. That's why I rate the ZX TD as a bargain.
This isn't knocking the well respected Golf, just making a factual comparison between two cars I know well.
Last point re the heater matrix on the ZX. If anyone is considering having one changed for anything like the £800 mentioned above (and can get the car to the East Midlands area) then mail me for a huge saving.

where i come from you can buy a FCSH, 1994, citroen zx diesel for £895, with 72.000 miles. a 1992, zx volcane, FSH, 68.000 miles, for £795, but the best deal is this.....
1992, citroen zx, 1.9D aura, automatic, 90,000 miles, PAS, e/windows, e/sunroof, 5 door, same owner for the last 7 years, but this is the best bit - full service history, all old receipts, all old mot's, and a brand new citroen main dealer engine fitted 2000 miles ago, very good condition, and maintained regardless of cost, only £950 ono, the phone number is 0191 3883329, and its near durham.
