hi, ive now got a new problem with my diesel fiesta now.
when its cold, as in after ive left it overnight when i start it up in the morning,
1. its a pig to start, sometimes it will start, fire a couple of times then die, yet other times it will start fine!
2.why is it that i have to press down the clutch pedal to aid in the starting of it?, with the clutch pedel not depressed it sounds like its "draging", i never had to do that when i had my petrol engined car.
3.if i just let it tick over, it sounds like its misfiring & its also making a "pinking" noise & has got rough idling?
when it gets warm it fine, anyone got any ideas??

Hi
Do you mean a constant rattle and a tic tic tic
That is normal for a diesel
You should not start the car straight away anyway
you should turn the key to position 2 then wait for the glowplug light to go out then start the engine
Hope this helps

no, it sounds like the pistons are slapping against the sides of the shaft!
yes, i know that i have to wait for the glowpug light to go out before i start it, even after waitng for it to go out, it can sometimes fail to start that time round.

Hi
re depressing the clutch pedal,it is good practice to do this to lighten the load on the starter, otherwise it is having to spin gearbox cogs in cold, thick gear oil, hence the dragging sound.

Hi
Has the fuel system been checked recently sounds like a partial blockage.
Is the fuel tank system similar to the petrol model of same vintage because if it is then it will have a pressure release system you are made aware of this if there is a hiss from the fuel tank cap when removing it
Also is there a fuel filter on this engine that lets excess water out of the system a partially blocked system may cause poor starting or poor running
When i say may do its because iam not a mechanic

ok, ive NOT noticed a hiss when i undo the fuel filler cap, but this could be because the filler neck is not sitting correctly on the filler cap housing, thats the bit that attaches to the car body (hope you understand what i mean) has anyone got a blown up pictures or know of any web sites that expand pictures of the area in question?
ok, right if it is a fuel blockage, how would i check this?, ive yet to replace the fuel filter in the engine bay, is this the only one or is there another filter locacted near the fuel tank.

how long is the glow plug light on and is it longer than it was before ie before replacing them?
|
Hi
I understand what you mean
Do you have a haynes manuel if you do look up diesel fuel filter i think that is needs to be replaced if it hasnt been done for a long time.
Could you give me a list of the things you have done since aquiring it to paint a clearer picture
Thanks

Hi
Please let us know how it goes
I suggest a good run up the local motorway for about 20 miles to clear it out (italien tune)
Do that before and after the new filter and note the differences
Hope this helps

i drive up & down the A12 twice a day, so it gets a nice clearout like that, driving at 70mph for about 18miles, then some town driving.
ive been told that my new glowplugs could be faulty, how would i check this out??

from what you have said I would go for replacing glow plugs.new or not they are in cold weather the difference between starting and not.as it runs ok after starting cant see any other problems but then I am not into diesels. they are under warranty so give it a try.

Have you checked that the glow plugs are getting power for long enough ie at least 5 - 10 seconds. Connect a voltmeter to any glow plug & switch on ignition. You should get almost 12 volts for at least 5 - 10 seconds if the engine is cold. If you havn't got a meter just connect a 12 volt bulb between a glow plug & earth, it should light when the ign is turned on as above.
If you don't get voltage to the plugs for sufficient time you may need a new control box.
HTH.
