Makes one wonder what the bonus was really.
|
you can' deny that the 1982 Cortina Crusader was a 'proper' special edition that was sought after then and sought after now.
you didn't get much in extras though, just a mish mash of ghia trim on a GL car.
|
Nicolles early 80's fiesta. Popular Plus. Never did find out what the plus was.
|
Any Lada Riva with a nasty stick on stripe, spotlights in the grille & a radio. Price hiked by narly a grand to give the punters £1000 minimum part exchange for absolutely anything as long as it didn't need feeding or taking for walks!
Roger.

Nomination for any Citroen AX limited edition and there were many.
Different wheel trims (which fell off) and, er, that's all...
|
The Metro City. One sun visor and one rear fog light. If you went for the City X, it came with two sun visors and fogs.
|
I've shamelessly nabbed this from a similar discussion on AlfaOwner, but the Ibiza 'Impact' - talk about a name you don't want associated with your car.
|
How appropriate that I should post after "Impact"!
Polo is an SE, and bizarrely specc-ed. He has alloy wheels but they're not VW ones so look like I've attempted to pike up my car by fitting them after buying it. (Apparently all the Polo SEs came with Radar Sport ones that year for some reason...?)
He also has fully adjustable seats which seem a bit advanced for his age, and electric mirrors, despite having no electric windows or central locking.
I still love him though! :)
|
I have a 96 Golf SE and that has the same "Sport Rader" wheels as standard which look a bit MaxPower-ish. They're only 15" though so don't even succeed at that properly...

always thought that the Pug 205 Roland Garros was pointless.
|
The killer phrase in the brochures is "Deigner Graphics" IMHO. Ghastly stick on side stripes with coloured bubbles or beach umbrellas on them or perhaps exotic place names. What a con!
|
What do GL, L, HL etc actually stand for?

L = Lamentable
GL = Gullibly Laughable
HL = Hugely Ludicrous
GLS = Generally Losing Status

Am becoming convinced that NoWheels is NoDosh in a dress.
Anyway, I forgot Polo's special edition "coloured interior".
You get used to it... apparently.
|

I dunno about NoDosh's tastes in clothing, but I can assure you I don't have an alter ego!
|
I'd like to nominate the Astra & Cavalier 'Antibes' from around 1987. Usual Vauxhall concoction of overstocked bits from the parts bin, and only avaliable in red, white or blue.
|
how about the citroen zx "pzazz"
i told the dealership that i would only buy the car if they removed all the "pzazz" stickers - which they did!
apart from the stickers, i never did know what was a special extra on that car.
|
I had one too, it had wider tyres and a fake leather stearing wheel.
Not much else I don't think.
|
I'd like to nominate the Astra & Cavalier 'Antibes' from around 1987.
God, I remember them. The Nova didn't escape the 'Antibes' badge either. All came with garish seat covers.
|
Yep; you're right DD, I forgot about the Nova. IIRC the USP for the Astra Antibes was a clock...and an electric aerial on the Cavalier version. Can't remember what particular extra special feature on the Nova turned it into an Antibes. Nice white pastic wheel trims maybe?
|
Ooooohhhh my mind's going into meltdown now...was it the cavalier 'calibre' at the end of the Mk2's run? 2 litre engine; halfords body kit as standard; only available in red. I don't think I've ever seen more than 2 or 3.
Then there was the 'Brabham' Viva HB; white with black & white chequed go faster stripes. Not sure if they actually did anything to the engine or not.
|

IIRC, they all came with white wheel trims. I believe the other extra on the Cavalier was the seat height adjust.

The "Chicago" of 1991 vintage was quite smart - met black paint, alloys, velour upholstery and a decent Blaupunkt stereo if I remember rightly

This is what the Fiesta "Pop Plus" gained over the Popular
|

|
Nicolles early 80's fiesta. Popular Plus. Never did find out what the plus was.
i think the pop plus gets fabric seat trim, rear wash wipe, parcel shelf and heated rear window and a clock no less!
although popular wasn't a special edition.
was raking my brains for other Ford special editions i could think of today came up with..
cortina carousel 1981
cortina crusader 1982
fiesta finesse 1983
fiesta dash 1985
fiesta kingfisher 1978
escort linnet 1980
escort fanfare 1992
capri cabaret 1982
capri calypso 1982
granada sportsman estate 1979
granada chasseur estate 1980 (with matching suitcases!)
granada consort 1981
fiesta firefly 1980 (with awful red steel wheels!)
sierra azure 1992
mondeo verona 1995on
i'm sure they're others just can't remember them.
|
|
|
Crusader? wasnt that where they stole the badge from the daily express?
|
my uncle has a sierra "azure" That was the standard gl with metalic paint
|
Rover have a special edition 25 called "Ice" out at the moment, all it includes is Alloy wheels. Shouldn't it really include air conditioning.
|
The Polo Harlequin - every body panel a diferent colour.
They must have been on weapons grade stupid pills that day
|
Imagine the confusion in Police reports though if you used a Harlequin in a bank robbery !
Anybody remember the Citroen BX Meteor - what was special about I don't know except perhaps the clouds of black smoke as I took it to the dealer for my money back.
|
The meteor had a rear spoiler IIRC !
|
|
|
The Polo Harlequin - every body panel a diferent colour. They must have been on weapons grade stupid pills that day
Or some form of pills, anyway
|
I remember there were MG Metros as RED HOT or JET BLACK special editions, and when I was in the Austin Rover dealer, the slimey saleman was telling a woman how it was a special edition and so would probably be worth more money when she came to sell it in a few years!
|
|
>> The Polo Harlequin - every body panel a diferent colour. >> They must have been on weapons grade stupid pills that day Or some form of pills, anyway
I really liked the Harlequin! Guess I'd better check my medication ;-)
|
The old polo "twist", (late 80's)wasnt that the one that came in dull red or battleship grey with matching grey or red wheeltrims and quilted seat covers. still with 4 speed box and dubious brakes
|
I seem to remember a 1970s Morris Marina (or was it an Ital?) called the "Top Hat" because it had a vinyl roof. It was still, however, made of old salmon tins.
|
The "Top Hat" was actually a Hillman Avenger in blue with a WHITE vinyl roof - imagine trying to keep that clean!
|
I learnt to drive in my instructors mk1 Fiesta 950, it was some sort of special detion we used to call it the Fiesta faschist. It was terracota with a nice big stripe and had cloth seat trim. It was exciting to drive because above 40 it felt like you were peddeling the thing. Damn good instructor though, he got me through first go.
|
my first car - mark III fiesta 'Dash'- with added extras such as white wheel covers and a rear wash wipe it was a fully loaded dream machine! 950cc!
tho my friends would regualy write 'Lager' infront of the Dash sign on the back in permantant marker pen! finally went to the grave when i 180'd it into a bus shelter while racing a nissan micra!
|
>> The Polo Harlequin - every body panel a diferent colour. >> They must have been on weapons grade stupid pills that day Or some form of pills, anyway
At least the Harlequin was a limited edition (only 113 made according to a recent article in the paper).
There's one near me that sits on the owners drive all day, I have yet to see it move anywhere (whats worse, having it outside your home or being seen driving round in it ??).
|
My sister had a Polo twist in Navy blue.
Er... I quite like the Harlequin. There was one for sale on Ebay a while ago - tempting!
(I probably would have a Harlequin now if BodyshopWhoCan'tBeNamed had had anything to do with it.)

What a waste! I could give it a happy home where it would be muchly loved!
|
I had a Citroen ZX "Neon" special addition which was basically a base spec model with crappy body graphics, loud seats and a cheap pop up sunroof.
|
|
|
They must have been on weapons grade stupid pills that day
LOL!
Seriously though, given that we established in another the thread some time ago that the DVLA have enough trouble with get the colour right on the V5 for cars with normal paint jobs, what on earth did they do with these???
Can just see it now:
COLOUR: Take your pick...
:-)

The 1.6 engine with cat had pathetic performance however

I think it was based on the L car.
The Ford range at the end was a 1.3 saloon plus 1.6 or 2.0 saloons or estates.
I had TWO 1.6 saloons. Oh my!!!
Ford deleted the boot light and even supplied a non dipping mirror. One of them did sport the Daily Express Crusader.
The first one was stolen. I left it for a few minutes and was no further than 50 feet away out of doors and it went.
Recovered 12 hours later with absolutely NO interior.
Not burnt out just stripped, carpets everything.
I steered it out of a field behind a tow truck but with a Mole grip cos no steering wheel.
Someone wanted to upgrade their old Cortina.
The second one went for £25
A GOOD point. The cam belt went but 1.6 was a non interference engine.
Naff? It had double coach lines and fancy steel wheels.

Both mine where white. My first one I bought, Y reg with very low mileage, was spotless and appeared on the front of Motor or Autocar when the Sierra Sapphire was launched. Used as a comparison between MK4 and "Mark 5 Cortina?".
Happy hunting. I probably have a Haynes manual somewhere.

Saw an absolute classic the other day - a late 80s Austin Metro "New York". A hideous primer grey paint job with lurid green New York skyline type decals.
How come nobody has mentioned the Austin Allegro "Equipe" yet? Silver paint, spoked alloy wheels and massive orange side stripes
Nice
|
what about the vauxhall 'CASAnova' oh pleeazze....
|
|

It's quite a feat to make an Allegro even more naff! Mind you, the Allegro was so awful that it almost transcends naffness to become a sortof classic -- I had a very bad old one as my first car, and I was quite fond of its sheer hideousness

Fiesta Classic Quartz, 1996
Not JUST Classic, but Quartz too, so it must be really unique
Can anyone tell me what this has which makes it special? My Dad didn't know when he bought it and still doesn't now!
