Timing belt on 1998 A4 - Cas
Hi folks. Can anyone advise on when to replace the timing belt on a 1.6 1998 A4 Avant? It has 62k miles on the clock. Also, what should I pay for this job?

Cheers

When? Now. It's six years old and has done 62k - I think the recommended interval is 60k and five years seems like the maximum sensible life for a belt unless you're very open to risk.

How much? It depends where you are in the country, and whether you want a franchise or an independent to do the job. A fairly wild guess would be £200... any improvement on that?

Timing belt and tensioner change on a 1.9tdi was £300 from main dealer.

Tensioners on this engine wear, so DO check this out at the same time.

Thanks BB. Good tip on the tensioner - I wouldn't have known that.

Thanks David, I'll get onto it right away. Don't fancy the consequences if it snaps!

The front of the car has to be shifted out of the way to gain access to the belt!

I now have these belts down to a fine art!
