Hi
I see that prices for many used cars are very keen at CarGiant (aka the Great Trade Centre). I rang them and they said that their prices are non-negotiable. But is this really true?
I would be buying used without part-exchange, paying cash.
Anyone had any success with haggling there? If so, is there a best time of day, week, month to have a go?

Have a search of the forum, this has been discussed before, but my recollection is that there is no room in their pricing for haggling.
|
You're quite right - I now see it was discussed back in November 03. I didn't spot the search function on the right and searched the main site instead and got nothing.
Anyway, surely someone must have tried it on at CarGiant? Were you shown the door?

I thought the old 'good cop - bad cop' show during price negotiations (nasty dealer manager, nice car salesman) was industry standard practice so it will be interesting to see if this takes off.
Maybe they have room for negotiation on car mats, mudflaps tank of free petrol etc.

I tried with a Polo and they would not haggle. Period!
|
Their prices are sufficiently low, and they have such a high turnover, that they can afford to not haggle.
|
Having seen the way they are set up and the number and kind of person they employ to do sales, I would expect that they are actually not allowed to haggle, or at least not on the price of the car itself - maybe on the extras (finance, warranty, DiamondBrite or whatever if they offer it).

If you try that the second word you hear will be 'off'.
|
Got the message!
Worth a try at any of the other supersites?

If you are a cash buyer you are not their favourite sort of customer so it is very unlikely you'll get much off at a supermarket-type operation. They make a lot of their profit on finance schemes so a wad of notes isn't of much interest to them.

Traded my 1999-V Ford Focus 2.0 Ghia against a 2001-X BMW 520i SE at Carland a fortnight ago and managed to get the initial part-ex offer of £4,300 up to £5,000 so they're worth a try, with a number of sites around the country.

The prices at Carland appear to be priced with negotiation in mind. The A2 TDi SE they have for sale at the moment is up at £400 more than I paid for mine over 12 months ago and there's has done 14,000 more miles. Incidentally it's £900 more than the green one my main dealer had in at the time.

You can haggle at Carland. I did. Hard, to the point where we walked out twice. Ended up with a very nice price to change.
|
Exactly my point Renault Family - Car Giant has the same spec car, same year for £10,999.
|
|
Actually the sticker price on the BMW I bought from Carland seemed pretty good and below book - £11,999 for a 1 owner 2001-X 520i SE manual with 67k, full BMW SH and almost immaculate exterior.

in fact, some car supermarkets do not take cash at all!!!

Fords of Winsford don't haggle either, the screen price is what you pay regardless of how much you argue!
