I am regularly reading on this site about E36 BMWs or W123 Mercedes' or similar. What are these? How do you know? The only similar coding I know of is the C32 AMG, E55 AMG, etc Mercs.

These are the internal model codes. Talking about an S-reg 3-Series will invariably lead to the question "Old or new shape" but an E36 is an 'old' shape, the E46 is the new one. W123s are the 1976-1986 Mercedes 200/300 series, equivalent to an E-Class in that era, though there was no smaller Merc at the time.
Oh and there's no way of knowing except that generally the higher the number the bigger/newer the car, sort of - it's not a perfect correlation.
