my mk2 8v (89) seems to love humiliating modern hot hatches!!! its odd as i look after mine and dont nail it!!! escorts clios axs etc hmmmmmmmmmmmm
|
Acceleration is a function of the power to weight ratio; a Mark II GTI probably weighs under a tonne, or very close to it whereas a new one is probably nearer 1,300 kg. Plus of course someone in their souped up 1.2 Clio (60 bhp) probably looks down his inexperienced nose at a car like yours so it's somehow become something of a Q car.
Escorts and AXs are hardly modern though; but the XR3i was never a very good car in its day, though the AX was astonishingly light and quick. (A 1.1 AX would beat a same age 318i to 60, although of course would stand no chance if it wasn't through the gears).

i agree, classics are becoming q cars, i used to follow a nova d reg gte, it was stupidly quick, i was in a merc a class and could not touch him, also if someone could explain how he had blue flame flash coming from his exhaust i would sleep easier at night. . what did we know then that we dont know now!!!!!

Might be spark plug in exhaust:

is this really possible? spark plug in exhaust? hows it work
|
Of course
1. An A Class weighs about 1100-1200kg and could have as little as 82 bhp, compared to 700-800 kg for a typical Nova.
2. There were no D-reg Nova GTEs, so this car has obviously had some serious modification already. (They were launched in October 1988). There's a possibility that there was a 200 bhp+ Cavalier turbo engine in there, which will make a quick, if not necessarily stylish, reliable, safe, cheap or good handling car.

Dave,
Thanks for info and the oasis of grammatical perfection your posts always are.

i say gte it was de badged,it had a gte colour boot (white and grey) it just didnt stop pulling i reckon it was going over 130mph at some points....the merc was a 1.4 but very nippy.i suppose this means it was a cav engine, surley that would take some fitting into a nova!!!!!!!.

Not really. The same 1.3, 1.4, and 1.6 engine was fitted in Nova's, Astra's and Cavalier's. It was only things like the length of the driveshafts that were different. The 1.8 and 2.0 engines were little different to the 1.6 lump. Some people have even fitted the 2.0 16 valve engine into a Nova before now. On top of that they've even managed to fit the 2.0 turbo engine from the Calibra as well. (not all at once I might add)

Sorry about this, but I'm not convinced the Nova would have had to be at all souped up to outrun a 1.4 A-class. Although it would have to be if your fugure of 130mph is correct, but I'd be surprised if it didn't rattle itself to pieces at that speed.
It's lighter than an A-class, it's probably more powerful than the A-class (in my experience 'nippy' means slow, but a bit frantic so it feels quicker), and for the cornering, the wide wheels will help, but it's got a much lower centre of gravity than an A-class too.

oh and it cornered like it was on rails...i couldnt even stay with him there with \"esp\" and \"abs\" it had big wheels though!!

I seem to remember an article highlighting the fact that the current Golf GTi is getting on for twice the weight of the original Mk1. Progress? What progress!!
|
|
The mark 4 Golf 2.0 GTI only had 115bhp, thats the same as many people carriers and several 1.9 diesel VW engines had more power and would thrash a GTI in the real world.

The Golf Mk4 with the 2.0 engine was only marketed as a GTi in UK. The 'real'GTi was the 1.8T with 150bhp and a lot of other enhancements.
To externally distinguish them in UK the 150bhp version had the GT element of the badge in silver and the 'i' in red. Although privately imported 1.8T cars have the whole badge in silver.

In a word, weight.
Lots of it.

Forget weight and power, there is a much bigger factor at work here.
Ever noticed how a twelve year old Cavalier 1.8L is able to hold off a Police Volvo T5 for mile after mile on these pursuit videos?
You only need an idiot behind the wheel to make any car "blow away" another.
It is mostly the older GTIs that are bought/stolen by idiots hence they will always be faster.

Presumably at least some of the weight is safety-related, and not necessarily a bad thing. Although I suppose extra weight in itself can be dangerous if you get in the way of it.

Well SP30 I agree; I can only conclude that my '89 GTI is well fast. Find a good one and they are seriously good value for money. It has loads of power up to 5k rpm and is great to drive with lots of torque. Even 1.8T Golfs aren't much quicker; probably why most 'proper' hot hatches are knocking on 200bhp now to provide decent performance. Then of course you get problems putting down the power through the front...

Whenever I see this thread on the menu I read it as 'Why are modern gits so slow?'
Maybe Backroomers could supply some answers to this one.

Is that instead of the old variety? Now back to motoring.....

Hi,
I have a 1.8T GTI and the whole badge is in silver but under the bonet it's definitely the 20v turbo - I bought it from a VW dealer second hand - have I bought an import? Worried now.
|
When I had a Golf GTI 1.8T (T Reg), it came brand new with silver GTI badge. It was not an important because it was a company car sourced via Dial/Leaseplan. At the time VW apparently had supply problems for the red I's, believe it or not.
I later had the garage change the badge but the car was nicked after 6 months. I'd keep the silver badge in case ;-)

Knew I should have proof read that... clicked on wrong button. Meant to say it was "not an import" of course.
