how easy is it to replace sincro mesh so my gearbox doesnt feel like a bucket of slugs!!!! gti 8v f plate

Unless you seriously know what you are doing it is best to replace with a recon. Are all gears crunching as you change gear?.Or is it only one or two and what gears doe`s it happen on?.It is possible it isnt g/box could be clutch causing it.need to know more.

its just selection, the reverse gear gate is weak, and there is no deffinition to selection( every gear feals like neutral) stick moves so much, slight crunch if performance driving and downshifting to second from third.
|
Could be a problem with the gear selectors/springs, cheap and easy to get at and fix.

Sounds like the remote mechanism is worn.ie gear lever to remote rod is severely worn. Not certain if they are repairable
but may find a better one from a scrap yard.Am not sure how easy they are to replace but would think that is the problem.Older fords suffer same prob/age

There was a program on \"Discovery - Home and Leisure\" a little while ago with Mike Brewer and Ed China called Wheeler Dealers. The mk1 golf in one of the episodes had this problem. IIRC, cost around £100 for replacement linkages and bushes, and took around 5 hrs to replace.

This is a linkage problem and a week syncromesh on second. Unless you reaaly want to drop the box off and spent £160/180 I would fix the linkage problems and leave alone and learn how to double de clutch my friend. Regards Peter
