This subject was covered in these pages several weeks ago.Try a search.
One possible cause is a failure of one of the heater by-pass valves. The one that fails is the one with the aluminium body.
When it fails it cuts off the flow of hot water to the heater matrix.
A replacement costs, I believe, about £25.

1. The valve is located in the hose which runs from the gearbox
end of the cylinder head to the heater matrix connection at
the bulkhead, close to the ignition coil.
2. The metal tube I used came from the remains of a metal water
pipe which I had replaced earlier. It is possible to obtain
proprietary connectors made of plastic. Try motor factors or
car accessory dealers.
3. The thin by-pass hose can be plugged using a bolt of the
appropiate size clamped with the hose clip.
4. Be warned. These by-pass valves were fitted under a recall
programme after it was realised that failure of the heater
matrix could tip hot water into the passenger compartment.
It is possible that your heater matrix has failed and the
valve is actually doing the job it was intended to do which
is to cut off flow/pressure to the heater matrix.

thanks! have attempted repair using a spark plug socket with rubber removed as linkage and used a bolt as you said. i have very slight improvement in air temp. but the prospect of leakage has driven me to buy a new matrix, theres one on ebay im tracking, any idea what they retail at from vag? oh and cheers for concise instructions keep up the good work!!

Golf heater matrices are about £32 + VAT from German and Swedish.
