Any recommendations on trolley jacks before I default to the Halfords option?

Machine Mart. Don't go over the top and buy one much bigger then you need. Often bigger jacks can not get close enough to the botton of a strut as the trolly wheels hit he tyre.

Happy shopping. Makro were selling a 1.5 ton in an abs case for 12.99 plus vat

I second Machine Mart, bought one bigger than I need though, lots of other lifting points so not bothered about big trolley wheels. I don't recall the exact model number (can get it if required), but the one I got came with two axle stands of an equally impressive quality. It wasn't cheap at close to 70 pounds with VAT, but automotive Jacks and potentially life saving axle stands are not something I like to be too economical on.

I went for the Halfords option a few years back. It's a 2-tonne jobbie bought for use on either the car or the caravan and so far (touch wood) I've never had to use it. I did have a dry run with it just after I bought it though and all seemed well.

Leatherhead Halfords has now closed so I couldn't take it back if I had to!

Perhaps a look at http:/www.screwfix.co.uk would be worthwhile, esp if you'd like it delivered.

Bought Halfords one 10 years ago. cheapest and smallest/ Still going strong. No problems, easy to use and not to heavy ( makes a difference if you are not used to moving one daily)
Would buy again - hope I don't have to:-)

Trancer. I did not mean the diameter of the wheels but the total wheel nut to wheel nut width. Think I paid £20 on offer for a pro series 2 tonne. Good lift height and speed. goto www.machinemart.co.uk

I bought one last year in Lidl (yes, amomgst the food they have tools and such like with stock changing every week). Cost was £9.99, made in Germany and with a useful feature which was that the operating socket (into which the handle is slotted) can be rotated through 360 degrees. I've found a number of situations where its been useful that the pumping action can be out of line with the jack itself. But otherwise I would go to Machine Mart and buy a jack with a long lifting arm and not too wide a wheelbase.

For once, I can actually recommend buying something from Halfords. I have a 2 ton trolley jack from there, bought several years ago, used very often and no problems so far.

I also have a battery charger bought from Halfords several years ago (seven or eight years), that had had a fair bit of use and no problems with that either.

Don't forget to also budget for a good pair of axle stands. Never rely soley on any jack to support the car whilst any part of your body is under it.

I already have axle stands. It was the nerve-wracking experience of using my Capri wheel-change jack to get that car onto these stands that has persuaded me that a trolley jack is the only sensible lifting device. All this is prompted by the need to get the alloys off my MB for refurbishing.

I bought the Lidl trolley jack as well and it is quite happy jacking up a heavy off-roader and is easy to operate.
Only realised recently that Lidl might mean nothing to people outside the North and Scotland because those are the only places they have stores.

My goodness, they've moved Farnham from Surrey to Scotland. And Ashford's disappeared from Kent too.

Relax, doc, they're all over (and especially in Germany!)

I got the idea that the stores are only found up here because the broadsheet with the offers on only lists stores in Scotland and the North. Must mean we get different offers from you. With my obsession with their bargains I'll now have to travel to Farnham every Monday and Thursday.

I have a 20 year old 2 tonne Halfords model. It's had some hard use and abuse, and has been totally reliable.
The only thing I find a bit annoying is when the clearance is low and there is barely room to move the lever up and down, or it fouls an exhaust pipe or something like that. Perhaps they all have a vertical pumping action.

One tip if you ever need to use one on soft ground (like pulling bits off an old car in a field) is to use an old small thin domestic radiator to spread the load and keep it stable. And the ridges are ideal for stopping the wheels from skidding about.

Thank you everyone for very helpful responses. Just as I was beginning to check out the various options, one of my pub friends reveals that he has a 3 tonne jack that he's happy to lend me, so that'll do nicely for now.

Yes, I have a Halfords unit of that vintage too. Mine has a bend in the handle that raises the end you hold and, like you, I've often wished it came with a straight handle as it does tend to foul the car if the jack is well underneath. However, can't fault it for reliability. Never even had to put a drop of oil in it.

The Lidl offers are normally the same all over the country. Very occasionally they have a regional offer. You can see all the current offers and also whats coming in the next two weeks on their website www.lidl.co.uk

Nice line in tow-ropes came in yesterday.

I\'m in London and have 5 stores within 3 miles so they are definitely not limited to the North and Scotland. Nice though those areas are.
