Suzuki Grand Vitara - & importing - Metropolis.
Good afternoon everyone,

I am looking at 2nd gen (1999 to 2005) Suzuki Grand Vitaras, petrol and v6 auto only.

Apart from being quite old now, anything I should look out for with these? Weak points?

I plan to import from Japan so rust should not be an issue. On that topic, if anyone can recommend (or has comments) on a good importer, auction house in Japan or any aspects of the purchase and import process i’ll be very grateful.

Many thanks!

Best,

Metropolis

Not a popular car to import from Japan . Plenty of uk models around. Generally very reliable with no major issues. Lots of paperwork involved to get the car to the uk . I would also check insurance costs .,

Not plenty of that gen Grand Vitara Doc, only two 5 door examples nationwide on Autotrader, both of which are 2.0 manual. Does beg the question of why that particular era . Beauty is of course in the eye of the beholder, but it is hard to make a case for that gen over the next one?. I like them well enough, but not nearly enough to go to all that bother and cost getting one imported from Japan!.

And while the next gen wasn't available in the UK with a V6, the 2.4VVT makes more power and torque (albeit 300rpm higher) than the previous 2.5 V6.

Many thanks both. As to why this gen, only personal preference as they are just a bit more old school mechanically than the model that followed which I prefer.

Also once you’ve got the car , it’ll need a mph Speedo and a rear fog light .,

My understanding is that Japanese cars for their home market have limited rust protection but I may be out of date on that. You might need to budget to add or top up rust protection for U.K. conditions.

Nice looking cars though, I can see the attraction.

Have you actually looked into the availability of these in Japan for export?

I ask because I've just looked up two websites I've browsed in the past for Japanese imported cars (carfromjapan.com and sbtjapan.com), and between the two there are three examples of the Escudo (as they are called in Japan) of that age for sale. All three have the 2.0 petrol and only two were auto.

You could ask this lot if they can get you one. They have a decent reputation and BBD likes to browse their selection (as do I)

Thanks yes I plan to get a rust free example and protect it once it’s here.

Yes I have looked BBD and even considered the later Grand Escudo that Japan also got in 2.7 (Suzuki) and 3.2 (GM design built by Suzuki) flavour, but I just prefer the older model.

I am not sure if the lack of availability means they’re disappearing from Japanese roads, or people don’t tend to send them to auction due to low demand vs more desirable exports, there might even have been a lot exported already since 2005, there are of course a number of countries that buy grey imports including eastern Russia despite being a LHD country.

Luckily I am in no hurry so I can wait for the right one to come along.

Thanks for the heads up re speedo and fog light, I’m hoping it’s easy enough to get compliant parts from a UK version.

Not 100% sure on this, but i'm sure I've read before that you don't (legally) have to have a mph speedo. Obviously handy to have, but a few carefully positioned bright self adhesive dots marking where key mph points are would help till you got used to it.

You definitely need the rear fog light. But if you are getting the car through a reputable import specialist like The Car Warehouse, they will do this, anything else the car legally has to have, and underseal it too as a matter of course.

Thank you for taking the time to clarify that BBD, do you have any experience of what they typically charge on top of the sale price at auction?

May be an idea to read the Iva inspection manual from the DVLA ( passenger vehicles M1 ) all 300 pages of it .

I'm afraid not, but then I've only ever been browsing rather than seriously considering a purchase. I've also not looked at Japanese auction houses (for the same reason). The two websites I mentioned will typically include shipping prices to the UK (usually Southampton if memory serves), but I you'd have to deal all the paperwork and customs charges yourself, and you'll also need to arrange the fog light and underseal (though given most Japanese imports seem to arrive there, it is likely there are companies in Southampton who do this)

If you can get one through a reputable import specialist, it may work out more expensive than doing it yourself, but maybe not. After all it is reasonable to assume they would be able to ship "your" car over, along with a dozen others, for less than you can individually. What is not in doubt though is that getting one through an importer will be a lot less hassle for you, all you need to do is pay for it!

Thank you for your thorough reply BBD. I think on balance, if I lived near a major port it could be a bit easier to arrange things in persom, but I don’t so i will probably end up using an importer like the ones you suggest. If I am able I will post an update on the C a r 4 play forum in due course.
