Abdn to Manchester via Dublin, passport? - badbusdriver

I know that you don't need a passport for domestic UK flights, but the one i'm looking at has a 2hr stop in Dublin (Aberdeen to Manchester). Bearing in mind I wouldn't be leaving the airport, would I need a passport for this?

Technically, you don't need a passport to travel to Ireland but you should have some form of proof of identity showing that you are British. Normally, even transiting through Dublin airport, a non-EU/EFTA/UK citizen would need a visa with travel visas being available for Terminal 2 connections.

Well I would have my drivers license as identity for a domestic flight, but I was more concerned about whether ROI would be classed as international?. I maybe should also point out that the flight I was looking at involves two different operators, Aer Lingus from Aberdeen to Dublin, then Ryanair from Dublin to Manchester. Not sure if that would make any difference?.

I'll maybe just get the train. What with the check in time, the 2 hour stop in Dublin and the extra travel time to get from Aberdeen bus station to the airport (train station is right next to bus station), flying probably wouldn't save much time.

I would just pack the Passport. It's only small and then you're covered.

Don't have a valid passport, that's the reason i'm asking!

I experienced M/cr airport a week or two ago and it was easily the most unpleasant part of the whole journey from Oslo - it's just far too congested in the daytime. Take the train any day IMHO, and change at Haymarket.

In theory you can travel to Ireland without a passport. Personally I wouldn't!

Passport is regarded as unambiguous proof of identity. Risks - plane delays or flight transfers requiring exit through passport control, also coming back to UK where you are reliant on the flight going to domestic arrivals where no passport should be needed.

Train Aberdeen to Edinburgh 3 hours

Change platforms

Edinburgh to Manchester 4 hours

No passport / no long waits at departures

Easier than via Glasgow as you have to change stations in Glasgow . say 15 min walk

Yeah I have actually decided to just go by train.

Peterhead to Aberdeen on the bus is going to be about 1.5 hours and, assuming no delays, it will take just under 7 hours to get to within a few hundred meters of my ultimate destination near Stockport.

Going by plane, I'd have to leave home much earlier relative to departure time, partly because i'd have to get another bus from Aberdeen to the airport (circa 30 mins), plus they recommend checking in an hour ahead of domestic flight time. Then (assuming no probs in Dublin re the lack of passport!) I'd have to get from Manchester airport to Stockport.

Hey ho!

Train Aberdeen to Edinburgh 3 hours - Change platforms - Edinburgh to Manchester 4 hours.

Actually that is a bit pessimistic - the 9am from Aberdeen takes 2h20m to Edinburgh and the M/cr train takes another 3h20m, so you are there ih time for tea. Unless you are allowing time for customary delays, of course ....

Just checked via the Split Ticket people - On-Time was 6 hours 40 mins Aberdeen Station to Stockport with 2 changes.

Add on a the odd hiccup 7 hours was a reasonable guess

Grandson was 4 hours Edinburgh to Manchester Airport last summer.
