ANY - UK Car Hire For Drivers Over 70? - edlithgow

I have just heard that this is restricted, with many hirers refusing it.

This is going to be awkward, since it was my plan to use car hire to supplement my bus pass as required, say when moving heavy stuff, car ownership probably no longer being a realistic UK option for me..

How widespread is this phenomenon?

According to this lot

it is currently not universal.

Its not clear whether, or how often, there is an age surcharge.

Its also not clear if the phenomenon is spreading, but most things get worse,

Not looked into it myself as I've still a wee while to go.

But, on the one hand, I believe car insurance for drivers above 70 does start to increase in price anyway, so maybe not a surprise that car hire firms add a surcharge?

On the other hand, going by the info I found recently looking at car accidents and age of driver (2023 only) for another thread, it would seem that male drivers age 71-75 are amongst the least likely to be involved in an accident. So going by those stats, car hire companies (and your normal car insurers) imposing a surcharge on drivers over 70 (but under 80) does seem rather unfair?

Well according to their website ZIPCAR car sharing service are only interested to see that your over 25. Could try them?

Out of interest I simply logged into Easyjet for a couple of days car hire next week using age of 75.

Some companies may have age restrictions but the Easyjet site came up with 263 vehicles across a dozen companies.

Getting a decent rate close to where you are may simply be a case of letting your fingers do the walking (across a keyboard)

The renewal on my MX-5 came this morning, £194 from £256 last year. Full NCD both years.

I'm 72 you know!

So insurance doesn't make sense.

I remember attempting "rational aegument" over the considerably higher 3PFF premiums to ensure a 2L Perkins Maestro van, about twice the cost of a (1300?) petrol, despite having a lower power output,

At least they are consistently inconsistent
