Ford S-MAX - 2012 Ford S-Max - DMF issue or something else? - Katie Noble

Hi all. After some advice please...

We've had our 2012 1.6 S-Max (Zetec, manual, diesel) since 2018 when we bought it with 70k on the clock. It's been a real work-horse and works perfectly for our family. Last year we had a new timing belt/water pump fitted and this year we've had to have a new AC condenser fitted (as the air con suddenly stopped working). We service it regularly and it's now on 108k.

We did a 300 mile round trip this weekend and on the way back I noticed a loud grinding/clunking sound when we stopped at the service station. It seems to stop once the clutch is pressed.

Any guesses to what it could be from these two videos? I'm thinking dual-mass flywheel but I know very little about cars!

Also, if it is the DMF, would you recommend getting that and the clutch replaced (around £1,200) or should I start looking for a new S-Max?

Huge thanks in advance.

If the noise stops when you press the clutch, that’s often an indication of a dmf issue. You would be advised to get the clutch done at the same time as it’s the same amount of work. If the rest of the car is sound, I would think it’s worth it.
