I like the look of the car. Like the lines and the squared off shape. If the headroom/seating position is good, I think I'll ask for a decent extended test drive.

Interesting. I am not familiar with this brand although on the topic of Chinese cars I have driven a Haval H6 which was impressive as a crossover.

Please do update on the test drive if you try it.

I am intrigued by the part of the article that says it has hill descent control up to 37 mph. Not sure I’d want to be descending a muddy slope at that speed, but good for top trumps if top speed of HDC is a criteria..

Beauty is of course in the eye of the beholder, and while the Korando (IMO) is handsome (if slightly anonymous), the best I can come up with (in the interests of civility) for the Jaecoo 5 is that it isn't!

I have read other reviews. They don't like the Korando either or the newer KGM cars.

But there again I don't think a lot of the Telegraph.

Fair enough, but they do look very similar, albeit mainly on account of that grill! (As for Nessie?, well I'd be surprised to see it full stop, but much more so if I saw it in Aberdeenshire)

Lol, not supposed to be an off-shoot of NCAP but it would i think be a lot more objective. Not just in terms of brands but also misconceptions, such as when Matt Watson blamed what he perceived as bad ride quality on a 4x4 having a ladder frame chassis. Cleary he hasn’t been in, or has forgotten, cars like the Lincoln Town Car and Cadillac Fleetwoods (and their platform sharing cousins) of old, or in more modern times the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator and their Ford/Chevy/GMC platform sharers. I’m on a tangent here but I think the Jaecoo and other less well known brands do not get a fair hearing, especially in the UK where badges matter more than some other places.

Depreciation will be catastrophic, meaning it’ll most likely cost more overall than an initially dearer more mainstream car. If there are good PCP/Lease deals that protect you from this then that’s the way to run one. I certainly wouldn’t buy it outright.

These look fairly decent, but they are untested and from an unknown Chinese manufacturer. The press aren’t impressed, and the trade will hammer them when you come to offload it. As a savvy used buy in a few years? Maybe, time will tell whether they’ll prove robust and whether they can hold together in our damp climate.

Often these brands have already had a good run in the enormous and varied (climate wise) Chinese market before coming over here, although not sure if they salt the roads

What is the spare parts situation like? You don't want to have it sitting in a dealer waiting months on a part being shipped from China. I have heard of that happening to MG and they are now a fairly established brand.

I may be tempted by a 2 year lease. we'll see.

On the other hand went back with a mate so he could sit in the Dacia Bigster this morning and washed and cleaned and in the showroom it looked good. Seats better than the Duster too. Bit firm for me but interior dash looked fine..

It is a biggish car. Definitely approve of the looks.

I see quite a few of them (Jaecoo 7 though) on road now. Not driven but sat in one and seemed fine.

Take a test drive and if you like the car why not?

People used to laugh at Kia/Hyundai and see where they have reached now.

After making an enquiry (through Lease Loco) a few years ago, I regularly get emails featuring special deals from a lease company (Express Vehicle Contracts). One from about a week ago included the Leapmotor C10, which I'm not familiar with at all (though I have read and watched a few video reviews on the Dacia Spring rivalling Leapmotor T03), but it appeared to be a very good deal for an electric SUV of that size (just over 4.7M long).

The monthly price was around £130 with 12 months up front and while I can't remember the contract length, pretty much all the ones I've looked at have been 2 years.

I know it would be of no use to you, but i also remember getting an email off them, maybe 6 months ago, with an electric version of one of the Stellantis small vans for £80 per month!

So if you may be interested in a lease, it might be worthwhile contacting some lease companies in order to get email alerts to special deals.

You are not going to like the kgm Torres then...

Anyway I filled in the online form for a notification when the car arrives and within minutes got a call from a local dealer about an omoda 5 ...

After that we got to the bit about Ice or bev..

Ice . Why?

Same debate as on here. How about a PHEV.

No thanks evolutionary dead end and so on.

But after that welcome to go and borrow a J7 and then a 5 when it arrives.

You are not going to like the kgm Torres then...

While I'm still not a huge fan, I much prefer the looks of the KGM Torres to the Jaecoo 5. They (KGM) seem to have managed to make the car stand out without resorting to slapping a GIGANTIC grill on the front which (IMO) is to be applauded these days.

On a lease or PCP the big depreciation risk is avoided, and if it ultimately fails to impress it can go back in 2/3/4 years. However I would not want one even on a lease/PCP - leaving aside appearance which is a matter of opinion.

It is a sizeable commitment - a car with a limited unproven dealer network, no reliability data, and the major risk that a small part failure could put it off the road for weeks or months.

May be a good s/h buy in a couple of years when the concerns above can be replaced by more objective assessment.

Even without knowing the precise details of such arrangements with their 'up fronts' and 'balloons', it seems to me that the autofinance industry has cunningly created a milieu where regular smallish three figure monthly payments disguise what eventually turns out to be 'big depreciation' of many thousands of pounds a year.

PS (edit) is that picket fence thing on the front a muntjac deflector?

I have spent a couple of days recently working in and around the Jaecoo 7 (I know the 5 is the subject of your interest) and my overwhelming impression was that it’s OK for what it is. Lots of kit for the money, a big, bright, touchscreen that was a little laggy and not as intuitive as some, and what seemed to be decent build quality.
Driving impressions (petrol only) were formed on busy roads at probably an average of below 20mph on the roads in the vicinity of Alexandra Palace. But it drove, stopped, changed direction as requested and generally seemed fine.
As ever with these things, it’ll come down to how you get on with it - if your requirement is for a car that fits the above driving criteria, and is comfortable, I’m sure it’d be acceptable.
If you live out in the sticks, and spend more time on roads that provide some form of enjoyment, then it may come across as a bit white goods(y).

Saw one of the 7's in the 'flesh' so to speak. Looked comfy and well equipped but a little squared off for my taste. But my judgement isn't that great. I liked the ORA Funky Cat a lot. Turned out to be the fastest depreciating car in the UK. I still like it but it's not for me. I just ordered a MG4 LR in Met Grey. So let's see if my approval is another complete disaster.

I've always wondered what makes any of the Range Rover models attractive to certain buyers (and clearly, despite their awful reputation for reliability, some people want them). The body shape reminds me of a brick with rounded corners and edges.

So to me they do not set a standard for good looks.

And yes, the Jaecoo 5 does look like a Range Rover.

We're all different.

As an example.. I don't like the slashes and angles on the Tucson.

They have sorted the climate controls and they are physical now but the outside is not my cuppa.

As I posted earlier.. I won't see it when I'm driving. But the vertical chrome bits could also be body coloured or even black, with some nice Go-Faster stripes and/or door protection mouldings on the sides...

I do like the light coloured seat covers too !!

The interior looks alright. The exterior is a disaster. Chinese designers really seem to struggle with getting proportions right. The wheels look too small and the roofline is too high compared to the bonnet. The same mistakes as the MG ZS. No doubt they will develop and improve their designs as they get better market penetration in the UK, just as MG have, but it's a definite no from me right now.

Shapewise doesn't look any worse than a Range Rover of your choice.
