Temp Insurance for Someone Who Lives in France - Nsar1

Hi our daughter has lived in France since 09/20 and is visiting for two weeks in Aug. Our insurer (AA) can't do temp cover for people who don't live in UK.

Has anyone used a temp cover company they'd recommend?

Thanks

Assuming your daughter is visiting the UK in her own French registered and insured car,

"The general rule is that your insurance is valid throughout the European Union, which covers 27 countries. It's also valid in countries known as the European Economic Area, such as Norway. This also includes most countries bordering Europe, such as Turkey and Morocco. Even the post-Brexit United Kingdom is one of the countries where car insurance continues to operate normally! So, your trans-European journey should go smoothly"

But, the "green card" insurance certificate and the windscreen vignette have been abolished in France - it's done by an electronic database now if you get stopped, which presumably won't work in the UK.
To further complicate the matter, insurance companies now issue a "confirmation letter of insurance" in case the database isn't up to date.
(So why did they get rid of the green card and vignette?)
So she needs to contact her insurance company to issue her with a green card or provide an attestation that she is insured that will satisfy the UK authorities.

Hi I meant add her on to our policy for the two weeks she's here.

She doesn't have a car of her own

Pity you didn't tell me the basis of your enquiry.

You can try this company, they used to be able to do all sorts of odd insurance solutions.

I thought it was obvious from me saying I had already tried our current insurer.

Thanks for the link but Green Card insurance isn't the cover I'm looking for

Try Tempcover. I am British but have lived in Austria for 15 years, and use them when I visit my father.

A bit stable door after the horse has bolted but worth bearing in mind for next time.

Our daughter wanted use of our car for a few months whilst we were away. Temporary cover was very expensive (as you have found) - but adding daughter as a permanent additional driver was ~£30 for a full year. Daughter - age mid 30s, lives west country.

Another point - we have visitors driving from Spain. Whilst most UK policies still include the EU in territory covered, it seems the Spanish (and possibly the rest) restrict insurance to the EU which no longer covers the UK. They had to find separate insurance.

Unfortunately our insurer AA won't allow an additional driver if they live outside the UK, even though she is a UK citizen with a full and clean UK license. The irony is that in her job she occasionally drives British embassy vehicles.

Oh well, bullet about to be bitten...

I have just paid £37 for 3 days (72 year old, EU licence driving my father's 15-year old Peugeot Partner). Normally it's a longer period, and from what I've seen the cost per day goes up for longer periods. And you'll find that a large proportion of the cost is not insurance but the Tempcover "fee".

For some years my father was insured with LV, and they would insure me for any period for a £15 admin fee, but unfortunately they got too expensive for him and he moved to a less obliging company.

Our insurer (AA) can't do temp cover for people who don't live in UK.

We added an Australian relative to Mrs BJ's Direct Line car insurance a couple of years ago. There wasn't even an admin fee.

Quite a few years ago we investigated insurance where it was easier to add our newly qualified son to a car when he came home from university in the holidays. We ended up using LV and Direct Line for our fleet - and still do! These companies both seem to be good re adding temporary cover. LV has an admin fee, Direct Line doesn't but you are only allowed so many during the year.
