anyone who has driven one ever found the gearbox a bit 'clunky'
mine has been for a while and im wondering if just to get the box oil changed or if this is a worse problem, or if its even just the characteristic of the car

Garage described the knock when pulling away plus "clunky" feel . They did this before I had time to describe it so they obviously knew what the problem was. I was prepared to pay for a new box but they said it would be the same. Citroen customer services in Slough said what do you expect it is a mass produced car. It is because of this stupid comment that I will not buy another Citroen. I purchased the car at 9000miles from an auction it has now done 26000 miles and the gearbox is no worse. It is a 99 East Coast Saxo 1.1

My saxo diesel has a clunky gearbox - has had for 40,000 miles now!
Another problem I sometimes incur is that it will jump out of 5th gear as I am decelerating, say, coming off at motorway slip road!

anyone ever changed or greased the linkages on the box?
how easy is it? or how cheap?lol

If it is anything like a 306 gear linkage assembly, it's simply a case of getting under the car and greasing ALL the linkages (up to about ten of them) carefully - it made a marked improvement when i tried this, and i suspect this is the cause of BobbyG's jumping out of gear problem, which was what i was trying to fix at the time.

I second that, grease the linkages, maybe replace some if they are weak. Change the gearbox oil. If that doesnt work, try a specialist.

only seems to be chanding from first to second gear, the gear goes in fine i just hear a notchy sound as it does it, unless i do it very slowly, sounds to me like linkage as the noise feels like its from under the car rather than in the box iteslf,
whats the verdict guys?
fresh oil and a bit of grease?
saxo gearbox - Hawesy1982
Neither can do any harm (provided correct gear oil is used), and they're both pretty simple so i reckon those would be good starting points, if still no fix i suspect it will be struggle on like that or pay a garage £££

that was my view, ive tackled alot of things but never touched any of the gearbox components.

A standard fault with the Saxo/106 gearbox is rainwater ingress due to very moderate fording. This gets in through the rather inadequately protected breather on top of the box. A minute and undetectable amount of water ruins the gearchange.

Change the oil, clean the magnets on the level and drain plugs, anneal or replace the copper washers, and fill with the correct oil. This is a semi-synth 75W/90 to API GL-5 duty specification. Don't get this wrong! Cheapest place for gear oil is GSF.

ok after a few wasted trips to a certain fast fit centre who specialise in clutches and gearboxes, (in which after asking for this I was given quotes for rebuilds without them even looking at the car in the end!) i booked a day off to tackle this myself as I cant get to my regular mechanic as hes away :(

ok got some 75w90, some copper grease anything else anyone can suggest I might want to try?

I forgot to mention - the best tool for opening the drain and level plugs is the square bar from a domestic door handle, using a spanner on the bar. This also fits the cam belt tensioner wheel.

great! The thing is stiffer than before now!
any advice?

You definitely used the correct weight oil?
And you didn't overfill?
Did you grease the linkages too?

If 'yes' to all the above, then.....i don't know, sorry

The correct viscosity for the majority of PSA vehicle gear oils is 75W-80. Take a look in the Haynes manual, I have AX, Peugeot 405 and Peugeot 406 versions all with a Duckhams product quoted. By using a 75W-90 in the recent cold weather you could have spoiled the shift character. Not only that there are requirements for synchromesh corrosion that are not part of all gear oil specs. A recommended oil will cover this.

The essential thing to watch for is the "W" after the lower viscosity value. Cheap oil might be described as 75/80 or 75/90 but would be unsuitable and too thick, especially at the moment. The "W" refers to the low temperature viscosity measuring point (-18 deg. I think). Whether the upper limit is 80 or 90 is probably immaterial - my 106 with the same gearbox is presently filled with Duckhams semi-synth to GL-5 75W/90 and works smoothly, even first thing. I have found some cheap gear oils to be very poor in terms of their low temperature performance.

What sort did you put in?
